‘Godfather of football’ fondly remembered by County Roscommon soccer club

The first manager of Rahara Rovers, described as the “godfather of football” has been fondly remembered by his beloved club following his death earlier this week.
Bertie Fallon of Toberdan, Lecarrow, passed away peacefully in the devoted care of the wonderful staff at the Sacred Heart Care Home, Roscommon, on September 3rd.
Rahara Rovers paid a heartfelt tribute to their former manager, noting how he was to the forefront in Knockcroghery Rovers and St. John’s Athletic before becoming the first manager of Rahara Rovers in 1998, guiding the club back-to-back promotions in its first three years.
“We made it to be in the top three teams in the Roscommon and District Premier League which was incredible for our small townland club competing with the town teams in Roscommon and East Galway.
“He (Bertie) was an inspiration to all of us lucky enough to be coached by him at the genesis of our football journey,” said the club on Facebook.
“Bertie loved the 4:4:2 formation and made the game simple for us to understand through the advice about our individual roles but he also made us play like a team that really enjoyed playing football together. He instilled in us gentlemanly virtues to have a healthy respect for the referee, the opposition, and the people who came to watch us.
“Bertie was a cross between (Sir Alex) Ferguson with his winning mentality, (Arséne) Wenger with his sharp focus on every aspect of the game and (José) Mourinho with his charisma and wit.
“Lads came back from wherever they lived in Ireland to play for Rahara under Bertie on a Sunday morning.
“We hung on his every word. He was respected more than any man that set foot in Clover Park, and he will always be in our treasured memories.
“Sleep well Bertie,” concluded the heartfelt tribute.
The late Bertie Fallon will repose at Smyth’s Funeral Home, Roscommon, on Sunday evening, September 6th, between from 4 p.m. and 6 p.m..
Removal from his home on Monday morning, September 7th, at 10.40 a.m., arriving to St. John’s Church, Lecarrow, for Mass of the Resurrection at 11 a.m.. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
