A young Ballinlough man helped the Republic of Ireland schools’ team defeat England recently.

Oisín Kelly lined out for his country’s schools’ team that overcome England 2-1. Kelly started at left back and played the full 90 minutes, helping the Irish team to a satisfactory win that concluded their Centenary Shield Series.

The Republic of Ireland team managed to secure victory at the home of Athlone Town FC.

Kelly was part of the Michael Glaveys/Éire Óg squad that claimed the U-17 Division One Championship in 2022.

He was also part of the Michael Glaveys/Éire Óg side that reached the U-20 Division One Championship final last December, scoring 1-2 in the final against Roscommon Gaels.

The Leaving Certificate student also helped Ballyhaunis Community School claim the Connacht Senior C football title last year.

The Republic of Ireland secured third place in the Centenary Shield. The result was a fitting way to end Head Coach Derek O’Brien’s seven-year tenure with the Ireland set-up while Kelly did his reputation little harm with a number of solid performances.
