St. Dominic’s dump defending champions out of senior ladies’ football championship

St. Dominic’s caused a huge upset in the quarter-finals of the John Keane Kia LGFA Senior Football Championship, beating defending champions St. Brigid’s by six points on Sunday morning to set up a semi-final encounter against Clann na nGael.
The Knockcroghery-based side had lost all three group games, but they turned their form around spectacularly to stun St. Brigid’s by 4-10 to 2-10 in Kiltoom.
The underdogs made an explosive start, with Kaitlyn Egan grabbing two early goals.
Brigid’s looked to have weathered the storm when Kara Gallagher found the net before Alison Nugent added a couple of points to edge them ahead.
Aoife Gavin replied for Dominic’s, and when Michaela Lohan was fouled for a penalty, Aimee O’Connor converted to leave her side 3-4 to 1-6 ahead at the break.
Egan completed her hat-trick of goals in the third quarter, and even though a free from Kate Nolan deflected off a Dominic’s defender’s hand and into the net to leave just three points in it with ten minutes remaining, points from Lohan, Gavin and O’Connor sealed a famous win for their side.
In the other semi-final, Boyle eventually found their range to defeat St. Ciaran’s, 1-13 to 0-6, in Abbey Park.
The visitors' defensive shield frustrated the hosts early on but a run of points from Boyle before half time, including two from Player of the Match Micheala Ward, left Kieran McKeon’s side 0-7 to 0-3 ahead at the change of ends.
Some early pressure from Ciaran’s in the second half resulted in their only point from play by midfielder Shauna Fitzmaurice, but a well-taken goal from Katie Conroy settled Boyle, and they duly tagged on the scores to record a comfortable victory and set up a last four meeting against Éire Óg.
