Thomas tops as competition nears halfway stage

OLD FIRM: David and Thomas Concannon set up another showdown in the Hollywood Bar Darts Superleague last Friday.

The Hollywood Bar Darts Superleague continued on Friday evening last.

With the standard of player present on the night and the race for points as the competition nears the halfway stage, there was some great darts was witnessed throughout the night. Group stage checkouts of 105 (Sean Fleming) and 116 (David Concannon) got the competition up and running, but top checkout on the night went to Paul Carton who took out a 120 finish.

On the night, the final went down to two players showing top form across the night. On one side was David Concannon, who having made his way through a difficult group, followed it up with a last 16 win over Martin Fleming (3-1), before a 3-0 quarter-final win against Aaron Blaides was backed up by a hard fought 3-2 semi-final win against Sean Fleming.

On the other side of the draw, Thomas Concannon had topped his group before a 3-0 win in the last 16 against Kieran McCormack put him through to the quarter-finals. A 3-2 win over Ken Turkington at this stage was followed by a 3-0 win in the semi-finals against Padraig Kearney, as Concannon booked his finals spot. The final itself started with Thomas on top form hitting back to back scores of 140 and 100. David responded excellently with consecutive scores of 100, 140 and 100.

However, a 135 from Thomas at the tail end of the leg made the difference as he went 1-0 ahead. Thomas kept the pressure up in the second leg, as consecutive scores of 100, 140, 121 and 100 led to an impressive 13 dart leg to take a 2-0 lead. Pressure from Thomas at the start of the third leg (85, 90, 79) was met ably by David as steady scoring (85, 100, 74) made the difference in narrowing Thomas’ lead to 2-1.

David pulled out all the stops in the fourth leg as he made an excellent start (125, 95, 96) to put Thomas under the cosh, but Thomas was equal to the task with steady scores (100, 96, 100) seeing him across the line to take a 3-1 win on the night. Hard luck to David and well done to Thomas. Special thanks to all the players who took part and helped create such a high standard on the night. Finally, many thanks to The Hollywood Bar management and staff for their sponsorship of the event as well as the hospitality shown to all on the night.
