WATCH: Myself and Lisa are just ‘riding the tide’

Aoife O’Rourke has said that she and her sister Lisa are simply “riding the tide” after retaining her European boxing title in Sofia on Friday evening.

It has been 24 hours to remember for the famous Castlerea boxing siblings as Aoife followed in the footsteps of her younger sister Lisa by taking gold against Busra Isildar — the same fighter she beat to claim world championship glory a year ago.

Speaking to Boxing Ireland after her dominant victory, Aoife said that Lisa and herself would probably only realise what they are achieving together on the international stage when they were in the twilight of their careers.

“The way we are now — myself and Lisa are just riding the tide. We’ll look back when we’re older and realise that they were such special memories together.

“Being sisters on the same team will go down in history but, honest to God, I’ve seen Lisa through all her injuries. For her to finish on top of the podium last night, nobody deserves it more. She has genuinely put in the hard work behind the scenes to get to this moment.

“It’s genuinely hard to sum up. We all want to get in and we all want to perform to reach this final stage, but to actually have it happen again, I honestly cannot believe it right now. 

"It’s really special and I’m just looking forward to enjoying the moment,” she explained before declaring that she was looking forward to the celebrations at the “O’Rourkes' kitchen table” when they return to Castlerea.
