Evening of music and film in Boyle

internationally renowned singer Christine Tobin with her fabulous six piece band will play in Boyle on April 30th.

A music and film event will be held in Boyle on Wednesday, April 30th at the Church of Ireland, Green Street, starting at 7.30 p.m..

The evening, presented by Boyle Film Club, will include Ken Loach's film ‘Jimmy’s Hall’ about Jimmy Gralton from Effrinagh, County Leitrim, and internationally renowned singer Christine Tobin with her fabulous six piece band who will play a set of favourites associated with Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Tom Waits and more.

Devised especially for International Jazz Day, this double programme has a social historical context and explores Ireland’s own jazz journey and its place in our history.

The evening will take the audience from the era of the anti-jazz campaigns starting in the late 1920s, to its influence on dancehall music nationwide during the 1940’s & 50’s, to producing one of the world’s greatest jazz guitarists—Louis Stewart whose legacy is a burgeoning jazz scene today that is recognised worldwide.

An exciting connection between the film and Christine's band is that the two horn players, Ciaran Wilde sax and Cathal Roche clarinet, are both also in the band that play at ‘Jimmy’s Hall’ in the film. Not to mention of course that they are two of Ireland’s premier jazz musicians and are based locally. There will be a short Q & A with the musicians.

Christine presented The Lyric Feature ‘Out With Paganism and All That Jazz’ which was a Silver Radio Winner 2013, at the New York Festivals. Her awards include, ‘Best Vocalist’ at the BBC Jazz Awards, and she has the distinction of being the only person from the Irish Republic to win a ‘British Composer Award’.

She has presented and contributed to music programmes and documentaries for BBC Radio 3 & RTÉ Lyric FM www.christinetobin.org Band Line-up: Christine Tobin vocals; Ciaran Wilde saxophone; Cathal Roche clarinet; Phil Robson guitar; Damien Evans double bass and Dominic Mullan drums.
