The Dock showcases local theatre and performance art this May

Gerry Farrell’s ‘I had to go for counselling’ comes to the stage at The Dock on May 16th.
The Dock in Carrick-on-Shannon is hosting a showcase of local talent taking to the stage and performance space this May.
Coming on May 16th is Gerry Farrell’s ‘I had to go for counselling’.
Gerry Farrell is no stranger to the theatre - as a playwright, he has earned both critical and audience success with three plays, The First Protestant, The last Prime minister of Ireland and in 2023 the highly successful, The Sceptical Suffragette.
After 53 years working in theatre, and a twin career working in mental health over 48 years, Gerry is bringing a brand-new one-man show with both comedy and existential wisdom in equal measure to The Dock on May 16th at 8 p.m..
In ‘I had to go for counselling’, Colin O’Rourke discovers that retirement is not what he thought it would be. Disillusioned and depressed, he reluctantly accepts the advice of his GP and goes for counselling. What unfolds is, at times, hilarious, and at times a challenging reflection on his life.
Working through his many regrets and few achievements, he recalls events filled with drama and humour as well as sadness and regret.
He is tasked by the counsellor to find meaning in his life by putting together seven pieces of wisdom to leave for future generations.
‘I had to go for counselling’ is a fusion of his experience of working with people with mental health issues and his accumulated theatrical skills - an entertaining and uplifting experience throughout.
