Local Notes: Accident victim Marie Coughlan widely mourned

The passing of Ms Marie (Mary) Coughlan, King Square, Mitchelstown, arising out of injuries sustained in a two car collision in Mitchelstown on Sunday evening, March 30th, has caused profound sorrow throughout South Roscommon where she has many cousins residing. Aged 64, she was daughter of the late Paddy and Marie Coughlan, Willow Park, Athlone and her late mother was the former Ms Marie Claffey, Curramore, Kiltoom. She was the driver of one of the vehicles. The driver of the second vehicle also sustained fatal injuries in the collision. The deceased had been an employee of Allied Irish Bank in County Cork for a number of years and she was deservedly popular with her work colleagues and the general public alike. Of an affable and caring disposition, she was devoted to her extended family and she enjoyed friendships with a wide age range. She enjoyed foreign travel and gardening as her main hobbies. She was niece of the late Mrs Rose Nestor, Cappalisheen, Kiltoom; the late Mrs Bridget Caulfield, Curramore, Kiltoom; the late Mrs Celia Lynch, Apple Hill, Brideswell and the late Mrs Frances Lynch, Shercock, Cavan. She is survived by one brother, Pat, Fardrum, Athlone; one sister, Helen, Dunboyne, County Meath; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. A funeral service was held in Mitchelstown, midweek. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St Colmcille's Church, Ballinahowen, on Friday, April 4th, the burial took place alongside her parents in Clonmacnoise Cemetery.
Very Rev. Michael Mc Manus, PP, Kiltoom and Cam, will hold a Holy Hour at St Brigid's Church, Curraghboy, on this Tuesday, April 15th, at 8 p.m.. The customary big attendance is anticipated.
A total of €2,000 was raised for Trocaire and Jessica Collins’ Cambodia project trip at the bake sale fundraiser in both Ballybay, Kiltoom, and Curraghboy, on Sunday, April 6th. The organisers extend a sincere thank you to all those who assisted or supported the fundraiser in any way.
A big number of people, inclusive of some family groups, took part in a fundraising walk/run in aid of Ardkeenan National School on Sunday evening, April 6th. The walk/run got underway at Drum Parish Hall at 2 p.m. and refreshments were provided along the route. The funds raised will go towards providing financial support towards the purchase of essential equipment for the school, especially for physical education.

The death took place on Wednesday, April 2nd, at University College Hospital, Galway, of Ms Brenda Duffy, Meehanbee, Drum. Aged 47, she had been in ill health for three years and she bore her illness with characteristic dignity and fortitude. The family have resided at Meehanbee, Drum, since 1983 and her passing at a comparatively early aged has caused profound sorrow amidst her extended family, work colleagues, neighbours and wide circle of friends. A past pupil of St Peter's NS, Athlone; St Joseph's College, Summerhill and the then Athlone Regional College, she graduated in computer engineering. She was attached to the Human Resources section of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin for a number of years and she was held in high esteem by her work colleagues and all those with whom she became acquainted for her affability, innate decency and integrity. She enjoyed overseas travel, cooking and reading as her main hobbies. She is survived by her parents, Brendan and Frances (nee Conway, St Anne's Terrace, Athlone); brother, Joe, Meehanbee; sister-in-law, Nina; uncles, Michael Conway, St Anne's Terrace, Athlone; Liam Duffy, Retreat, Athlone; Peter Duffy, Drum; aunts, Ms Margaret Duffy, Athlone; Mrs Joan Mulvihill, Kenagh, County Longford; Mrs Helen Mallen, Dublin, and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St Brigid's Church, Drum, on Saturday, April 5th, the burial took place in Drum Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Father Josef, CC, Drum. He was assisted by Deacon Tony Larkin, Athlone.
The death took place on Sunday, March 30th, at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, of Mrs Sybil Burke, Turrock, Dysart. Aged 90 on July 22nd last, she was the former Ms Sybil Shannon, Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, and she had resided in family setting at Turrock, Dysart, since June 1964. A national teacher by profession, she taught at both Rahara and Glanduff National Schools for a number of years and she was noted for her teaching skills with the junior classes in particular and her care and concern for the well-being of all pupils entrusted into her professional care. Devoted to her immediate and extended family, she was a most obliging neighbour and a reliable friend. An excellent homemaker, she was particularly skilful at cooking. A lifelong PTAA member, she received the various jubilee pins and certificates over the decades. She enjoyed travel and reading as her main hobbies and she supported a number of church and community activities down the years. She was predeceased by her husband, Luke, in December 2016 and is survived by one son, Thomas, Coolderry, Four Roads and one daughter, Mrs Mary Doyle, Drumlish, County Longford. A member of a family of three boys and two girls, she is survived by brothers, Geoffrey, Longford; Edward, Galway; sister-in-law, Mrs Mary Naughton, Ballygar; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd, Four Roads, on Wednesday, April 2nd, the burial took place in Tisrara Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Francis Beirne, PP, Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara.

The death took place on Saturday, March 29th, at Mullingar General Hospital of Mrs Geraldine Finneran, Bealnamullia, Athlone, who was Postmistress at Bealnamullia Post Office from 1978 until the turn of the century. Following the closure of the post office she reskilled and worked on community projects with the Kilbeggan Community Group, Vita House, Roscommon, the Marist Rehab centre in Athlone and the Roscommon Disability support group. Aged 72, she was the former Ms Geraldine Molloy, Cloontuskert, County Galway, and she had been a bank official with the Bank of Ireland for a number of years prior to marriage. The deceased was noted for her affability, conversational skills, tact and discretion in all her dealings with the general public over the years. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she performed innumerable neighbourly deeds and kind acts in her residential community with typical self-effacement over the decades. Throughout her life she supported a number of community and church linked activities and a wide range of charitable causes. She had been in ill health a short time and she bore her illness with characteristic resilience. She was predeceased by her husband, Tom, a native of Taughmaconnell, in October 2001, and is survived by her partner, Cecil Clarke, Borrisokane; daughters, Orla, Celbridge; Aoife, Darby, England and Deirdre, Walkinstown, Dublin. She is also survived by one brother, Joe, Cloontuskert; sisters, Mrs Maura Briscoe, Gortymadden, Galway, Mrs Carmel Glennon, Terenure, Dublin; two grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at St Ronan's Church, Taughmaconnell, on Thursday, April 3rd, the burial took place in Taughmaconnell Cemetery. The celebrants of the Mass were Very Rev. Sean Neylon, PP, Taughmaconnell and Very Rev. Michael Finneran, PP, Cloontuskert, a native of Onagh, Taughmaconnell.
