A reunion of the Castlerea Community School Class of 2001 will take place on Saturday, July 18th at 8 p.m. in Garvey’s Bar, Ballintubber with DJ Bill Haugh. Tickets for this 25-year reunion are €25 and can be purchased by contacting Dean on 086-1002521.
Castlerea Bridge Club members had their end of the season night out with a meal in Tully’s Hotel, on Tuesday, June 2nd. President Ann Kenny’s prizes were presented to the following: 1st, Dr. Kelly Henry and Mary Campbell Morris; 2nd, Fionnuala Lane Harte and Mae Glover; 3rd, Rona Lyons and Anne Sloyan; 4th, Mary McDermott and Kathleen Kelly; 5th,Josephine Fallon and Renne Webb. The overall winners of the president’s prize were Dr. Kelly Henry and Mary Campbell Morris. A most enjoyable evening was had by all.
Castlerea St. Kevin’s Minor Club extend best wishes to all students in the area who are sitting their Leaving and Junior Cycle exams. The club congratulates St. Paul’s and Cloonbonniffe national schools on winning Cumann na mBunscol basketball titles and Tarmon NS on winning a Cumann na mBunscol camogie title.
The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club lotto for June 3rd was number 30. Winners of this week’s lotto were Jimmy Joyce, Ciara Flannery, Tina Connelly, Michael O’Connor, and Seamus Mannion. Each receive €100.

There was sadness in the Castlerea area when word filtered through on Sunday, May 31st of the passing of Harry Crowley of Oran. Harry was an employee of Castlerea Mart for 30 years and was also its health and safety officer and did trojan work during Covid. He was highly respected by his employees and fellow work colleagues. Mart Manager Mr Brenda Egan and his staff and customers observed two minutes silence at Thursday’s sale as a mark of respect. Harry was an accomplished footballer and hurler. He won Connacht and All-Ireland football U-21 medals with Roscommon in 1978, and won a Minor Connacht Championship football medal in 1975, Senior Connacht Football Medal with Roscommon in 1978. He won hurling county championships with Athleague and Oran and was a member of the Roscommon minor hurling teams beaten in the All-Ireland finals of 1974/76. He was captain in 1976. He also played senior hurling with Roscommon.
The death occurred peacefully of Mr Padraig Hester, Vale View, Castlerea on Monday, May 25th in his 90th year, in the tender care of Roscommon Hospice, surrounded by those he loved the most. Predeceased by his parents, Bridget and James, his brothers Michael and Frank, and his nephew Seamus. Deceased was a very kind, gentle and jolly person, a wonderful neighbour and always had time for people. He had a great love of the land and took great pride in his farm. He worked at Castlerea Mart for over 20 years and was highly thought of by his employers and work colleagues. He was a great family man and adored his grandchildren. He was a man of great faith, and he had a great devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he will be sadly missed by his wife, Patricia; son, James; daughter, Bernadette; son-in-law, Graham; grandchildren, Gavin, Megan and Logan; brother, Canon Seamus; sister, Anna; sister-in-law, Marie, his many nieces and nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends. His remains were removed from his residence to St. Paul’s Church, Kilmurray and following Mass of the Resurrection, celebrated by Canon Seamus Hester (brother of the deceased) with concelebrants Canon Liam Devine, Kilmurray, and Fr. Michael Donnelly, Frenchpark, burial took place in Rathmoyle cemetery. Before the final blessing, his daughter Bernadette have the eulogy on her dad’s life. The ceremony was enhanced by the music and singing of Carmel McLoughlin. May Padraig’s gentle soul rest in peace.
The death occurred peacefully of Mr Michael (Mick) Moore, Ballinagran, Kilchreest, Loughrea and formerly of St. Patrick’s Street, Castlerea and Douglas, Isle of Man on Friday, May 22nd, peacefully and with great courage, surrounded by his family in the care of nurses in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe and previously St. Brendan’s Nursing Home, Loughrea. Predeceased by his parents, Martin and Molly, his brothers and sister, Sonny Moore, Fr John Joe, Fr Bertie, Sr Mary Magdalene. For many years the deceased worked for Flanagan brothers before opening his own furniture store on The Square, Castlerea (now Kearney’s Chemist). He ran a very successful business for over 30 years and was very popular. He had a great interest in sport, horse racing, darts, pool, hurling and football and poker. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Mary Frances; his daughter, Marian and his son Michael; his two grandsons, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, neighbours and friends. His remains were removed from Kilboy’s Funeral Home, Loughrea, to the Church of the Nativity, Kilchreest ,on Monday, May 25th and following Mass of the Resurrection burial took place in Kilchreest Cemetery. May Mick’s gentle soul rest in peace.
The death occurred peacefully of Mr Pat Kilkenny, Behy, Castlerea on Monday, May 25th at Oakwood Private Nursing Home. Predeceased by his parents Pat and Nora, brother Jim and his brother-in-law Joe. Deceased was a very kind, gentle and inoffensive person and a good neighbour. He was a farmer by trade and took great pride in his farm. He was a man of great faith and had a great devotion to the Sacred Heart. He will be sadly missed by his sisters, Rita (Castlerea), Anne (Birmingham), and Margaret (Castlerea); brother, Tim (Ballinameen); brother-in-law, John; sister-in-law, Sadie; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephew, cousins, wonderful neighbours and friends. His remains were removed from Gaynor’s Funeral Home to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea, and following Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr Kevin Reynolds, burial took place in Ballintubber Cemetery. Before the final blessing, his niece Sarah Kilkenny read a reflection ‘Close the gate’. The ceremony was enhanced by the Castlerea Church Choir under director Clare Kelly with organist Ena Conry. May Pat’s gentle soul rest in peace.
The death occurred peacefully of Lorraine Fitzpatrick, Ballagh, Donadea, County Kildare and late of Castlerea on Saturday, May 23rd at St. Vincent's Private Hospital. Predeceased by her sister baby Rosemary. Deceased who had been ill for some time, was a very kind, gentle and jolly person. She was a loving wife and a wonderful mother and she will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Pat; children, Mya and Ryan; parents, Teresa and Michael,(St. Patrick Street, Castlerea); father-in-law, Anthony; brothers, Darren, John and Paul; sisters-in-law, Brenda, Annmarie and Brenda; uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Her remains were removed from her residence to the Church of our Lady and St. Joseph, Prosperous, and following Funeral Mass committal service took place in Newlands Cross Crematorium. May Lorraine’s gentle soul rest in peace.
The annual Mass on Killtullagh Hill will be celebrated on Sunday, June 14th at 2 p.m. with Fr Joe Feeney. All are welcome. Volunteers are needed to help strim the grass in preparation for the Mass, bring seats on the day etc…contact 0870992373. It has also been announced that funding of €10,000 has been allocated for the enhancement and drainage of the roadway leading to Kiltullagh Hill. This funding comes through Leader Roscommon, County Council, and the Rural Recreation Grant. The group behind the project express sincere gratitude to rural recreation officer Kyle Flynn for his work to date and to local representatives, Cllrs Nigel Dineen and Paschal Fitzmaurice, for their support.

The Lake O'Flynn & District Angling Association will this year host its inaugural catch and release summer fly fishing evening competitions. “This is a great opportunity for us to welcome all anglers, new and existing, to take advantage of the longer summer evenings and enjoy the fantastic amenity that is lake O'Flynn. By holding a catch and release competition this will allow a flexible low impact format, which will help to protect fish stocks, promote responsible angling, support the local environment and tourism along with a social and community benefits,” said a spokesperson for the group.
