Local Notes: Darkness into Light, Percy French afternoon and church gate collection

DARKNESS INTO LIGHT 2026 

The Boyle Darkness Into Light committee is back at it and already planning for the 2026 event. A huge and warm welcome to the newest committee members - Fidelma Mullaney and Paul Walsh, all are delighted to have them on board. The committee is now looking for volunteers to join the candle light-up, catering, marshalling, music and entertainment and photography teams. DIED IN LONDON 

The death occurred recently in London of Mr John Casey, formerly of Lowparks Boyle. Predeceased by his parents, Phil and Mary, brother, Billy and sister, Ann. He is survived by his wife, Joan; sons, Phil and John; daughter, Joanna; grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, brothers, Michael and Larry and sister, Maura; nephews nieces relatives and friends. Burial takes place in London on March 18th. May his soul rest in peace.

SLIGO COLLEGE OPEN EVENING 

Sligo College Tubbercurry Campus (formerly North Connaught College) will hold an open evening on Thursday, March 26th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.. All are welcome, especially school leavers and adults looking to continue or restart their education. The college is also launching a new course this September: Pre Emergency Services. CELEBRATING PERCY FRENCH 

On Sunday, March 22nd at 3 p.m. the Percy French Society will host an event at Tawnytaskin Community Centre celebrating the Irish songwriter and artist. This will be an afternoon of his music, songs, and recitations. Light refreshments will be served, and a raffle will take place. Book your seat now on 086 8130005. Cost €15. Upcoming events at the centre include and the annual afternoon tea event on Easter Monday and in May the very popular Rambling House.

BOYLE GROUP SCHEME 

Boyle Group Scheme Ltd. has vacancies on its Community Employment Scheme for general operatives (environmental workers), support workers Citizen Information Office, and for a caretaker at St. Joseph’s Resource Centre. No experience is necessary and accredited training will be provided to support career development. The contract is for a minimum of one year. CEMETERY COLLECTION 

The Friends of Assylinn will hold a church gate collection on April 4th and 5th (Easter weekend) at St. Joseph’s Church, Boyle. Funds raised will help towards the upkeep and future projects in Assylinn Cemetery.

COURTYARD MARKET 

Visit the courtyard market, every Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the grounds of King House. A great choice of goodies, fruits, veggies, breads, cakes and art. Live music, weather permitting and a play area for children. From March 21st a welcome back to Erritt Nursery with a great choice of flowers, plants and herbs.

BOYLE GAA 50/50 DRAW 

Congratulations to Marie Kelly who scooped the Boyle GAA 50/50 prize of €2,310. The next draw will take place on March 21st with a guaranteed minimum prize fund of €2,000. Tickets online, from the club app or in various outlets around town.

CELTIC 50/50 DRAW 

Last Friday’s winner of the Boyle Celtic 50/50 draw was Jacqui Hannon, who won €1720. Tickets are on sale now for Friday’s draw from all the usual outlets and online. Tickets are on sale for the Boyle Celtic Community Hub Mega Draw – with over 30 prizes up for grabs and all funds going towards the development of the Community Hub. The top prizes wins a €1000 Centre Parcs trip.
