Local Notes: Elphin St Patrick's Day parade, Junk Kouture, fun run and windmill repairs

Abbeycartron National School has introduced a Return Recycling Bin as part of the school’s fundraising and environmental awareness initiative. Students, staff, and the community can donate empty plastic bottles and cans that have the Return symbol displayed.

The St. Patrick's Day parade will again take place in Elphin at the later time of 5 p.m. this year with €1,200 in prize money, so get your thinking cap on. No need to register your float, just turn up at the Fire Station ready for the parade. The theme of the parade is cultural inclusion - 1st, €500; 2nd, €250; 3rd, €100; 4th, €100; 5th, €50. Categories are best overall float, topical, creative, best school float, vintage, commercial/agricultural, cultural. Other prizes -€50 best dressed window, €50 best dressed dog. Most appropriately dressed child, crazy hair do, 1st, €20; 2nd, €15; 3rd, €15. Free face painting from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m..

JUNK KOUTURE 

Elphin Community College's Lucia aka Miss Mares took to the stage in The Helix last Thursday in the regional finals of the prestigious Junk Kouture competition. A big thanks to Lucia for her hard work and the team of people who have supported Lucia to get here. A huge thank you to Ms Prendergast, whose dedication has once again guided a finalist to this stage. Lucia is through to the national finals of the competition.

LATE MRS EITHNE WRIGHT 

The death occurred peacefully on Sunday, March 2nd at Blainroe Lodge, Nursing Home of Mrs Eithne Wright (née Gannon) of Ballynerrin Lower, Wicklow Town and formerly Caldragh, Elphin. Predeceased by her beloved husband William P. Wright and their daughters, Ita and Jacinta. Much loved mother of William, Imelda, Colm and Gerard. Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Fiona, Annie, Tracy, Jack, Sadhbh, Sienna, Jaida, Garbhán, Edith and Orren, extended family and friends. Following Funeral Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Wicklow Town on Friday morning interment took place in Rathnew Cemetery. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam 

COMMUNITY ARTS & DRAMA SOCIETY 

The Community Arts and Drama society held a meeting last week to discuss holding a production for the year ahead. The meeting was well attended and all present were very enthusiastic about holding a production. It is hoped to finalise dates and times soon for the production it is envisaged that it will be held late April early May.

The Credit Union office in Elphin will no longer open on Mondays from April. The branch will still be open on Thursdays from 2 p.m. - 4.45 p.m. Online services are available 24/7 via the App or Roscommoncu.ie Web page. Phone lines are open on 090 6626657 Monday to Friday. All members are free to use any of the four branches of Roscommon Credit Union no matter where you live.

FUN RUN IN AID OF DOWN SYNDROME ROSCOMMON 

A fun run in aid of the Roscommon branch of Down Syndrome Ireland will take place on Saturday, March 22nd from Orchard Park, Elphin at 12 noon. Trophy for first male and female in run category. If possible wear purple, but not obligatory. Refreshments served afterwards. You can run, walk, stroll or just chat and have a cuppa. All welcome. Please support.

This is a great way to help the environment while also contributing to school finances. The school encourages everyone to get involved—every small effort makes a big difference. WINDMILL NEEDS MAJOR REPAIRS

Elphin windmill, the oldest operational windmill in Ireland, was substantially damaged during Storm Éowyn and needs major repairs.A historically and culturally significant site in the agricultural life of Ireland, Elphin Windmill needs your support in raising funds to get the repairs done and reopened for the public as soon as possible. DAY CENTRE 

Elphin Day Centre provide a wonderful local service. If anyone wishes to avail of the wonderful day centre services please ring 0719635566 or 0876803675. Arts and Crafts are underway with Angela Everyone welcome. Yoga continues every Monday and Tuesday MART CANTEEN The Elphin mart canteen is open Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. serving breakfasts and dinners.

An activator poles walking is underway and continues on March, 20th at Elphin Community Centre at 8 p.m.. Poles supplied by Roscommon Sports Partnership.

TOWER BAR SESSIONS

 The next singers; night in The Tower Inn is on the last Sunday of the month at 8 p.m. All singers and listeners will be made very welcome and all genre of singing will be catered for, so come along and enjoy a fantastic night of entertainment. The regular Tuesday night sessions start at 8.30 p.m. and, again, everyone is welcome.
