Local Notes: Frank the Hereford, Elphin mural and Irish language classes

Frank, the Hereford, was sold last week at Elphin Co-Operative Livestock Mart. Frank was kindly donated by Eugene Halligan as part of a charity fundraising scheme organised by Irish Hereford Prime, the Irish Hereford Breed Society and Next Gen Herefords. All proceeds from the sale of Frank will go directly to Elphin Day Centre. Thanks to Sinead and Michael Conroy for rearing him. A special word of thanks to Padraig McGrath for kindly donating meal for Frank. Thanks to Dawn Meatsfor purchasing him for €2,000.

ELPHIN MURAL

Young people in Elphin have worked together to design and paint a fabulous mural on the mart wall. The wall brings some colour and community character to the area. A huge thank you to the Galway Roscommon Local Creative Youth Partnership and artist, Emily Beninghove, who facilitated and supported this creative project with the young people and thanks to Colour our Communities for their support funding and providing the paint for this great work. Well done to the budding young artists.

ROUNDERS

Elphin GAA is excited to announce a meeting on Thursday, September 21st at 8.30 p.m. in the club rooms. The club is gauging interest in forming a Rounders Club. It is open to all individuals who are interested in participating in or supporting the club.

COMMUNITY CENTRE CLG

The AGM OF Elphin Community Centre CLG will be held on Thursday, October 5th at 8.30 p.m.. The committee looks forward to welcoming new members.

FLEADH COLLECTION

Roscommon has been allocated the hosting of the Connacht Fleadh 2024. Strokestown will be hosting the event. As part of a Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann fundraising drive for the event a church gate collection will be held in your area on the weekend of September 23rd and 24th. All donations will be very much appreciated.

LATE MRS MADGE CAULFIELD

The death occurred, peacefully, on Wednesday, August 23rd, at Basildon Hospital. of Mrs Madge Caulfield (nee Diamond) late of Elphin. Sadly missed by her husband, JT Caulfield and children, Helen Paul and Christopher. Predeceased by her brother Patsy and sisters Angela and Marie. Sadly missed by her brother, Paul and sisters-in-law Bridie and Lily. Also mourned by her grandchildren, Christine Jack and Misha, great grandson Arthur, nieces and nephews as well as many neighbours and friends. May she Rest in Peace.

COFFEE MORNING FOR HOSPICE

A coffee morning in aid of North West Hospice will be hosted by Joan and Martin Sharkey on Thursday, September 21st from 10.30 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Please support this great cause.

IRISH LANGUAGE CLASSES

Coircal Chruachàin, a local Irish conversation group, is running Irish classes in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Tulsk. The course is aimed at people who did Irish in school but have forgotten most of it. The tutor is Tomàs O’Moràn. Further enquiries to 087 7832939. ZUMBA CLASSES

EVENING OF MUSIC AND SONG

Friday, September 22nd is National Culture Night and Carrick-on-Shannon Heritage Group is pleased to present a wonderful evening of music featuring the well-known Leitrim Male Choir and Ensemble 32 instrumental group, plus two soloists. The free event (no tickets required) begins at 7.30 p.m. sharp (doors open at 7) at St George’s Heritage Centre (Church Lane). Shannon Gaels GAA Club will host a Healthy Club Event, for all the community, including 5k Run/Walk and health check, on Sunday, September 24th in Croghan Village - 12-2 p.m.: Registration for run/walk and free health check for everyone over 16 years, 2.30 p.m. Fun/Run walk: 3-5 p.m. Barbecue, fun games, stalls, raffle. CHAIR EXERCISES IN PATRICIAN HALL
