ORATION

An oration was given at the graveside of the late Harry Connolly, Church Hill by Danny Burke. Born in Bruff, County Limerick in 1933,  Harry's late father Michael was a member of an Garda Siochana. Harry was only five months old when his father was transferred from Bruff to Athleague in 1934 and in September 1935 he was transferred to Castlerea where he remained until his retirement. He died in 1985. Harry was educated at St. Anne’s NS, the Marist Brothers and the Mary O’ Flanagan Secondary School. “He only spent three and a half years in secondary school because he was not that fond of Irish,” said Danny. “He asked his father to take him out of school and get him a job and that he did.” His first job was as a shop boy in Claffey’s Hardware and Grocery on St. Patrick's Street, Castlerea. He spent three years there. In 1951 he went to Portarlington where he worked for five years. That same year he won a minor All-Ireland football medal with Roscommon. He also won two County Laois senior football championships with Portarlington in 1954 and 1955. In 1955 he captained the Laois senior team that was beaten by Carlow in the Leinster Championship in Croke Park. In September 1955 he came back to Creggs to work. He suffered a bad knee injury in a mid-board championship game in 1956. That same year he played Senior Connaught Championship football with Roscommon against Galway. Later that year he played on the Creggs junior team that beat St. Michael’s in the County Championship Final in Castlerea. “The Roscommon Herald, reporting on the game said ‘Connolly, on one leg, beats St. Michaels’. He scored 3-3 out of a total of 3-4. He always said that he spent five happy years in Creggs.

In 1960 he won a Roscommon county senior football championship with United Stars Creggs and Oran in 1961. He went to work in Corbetts in Galway where he worked for twelve months and Harringtons Paints later Dulux, becoming area manager and was with them until he retired.

“He played with the Fr. Griffin’s Club in 1961 and was on the Galway junior team that won the Connaught championship. Playing with him on the forward line were Seamus Leyden, Sean Cleary and John Keenan who went on to win senior All-Irelands on the Galway three in a row team. Harry played championship football with three counties, senior with Laois and Roscommon and junior with Galway. He also played with five different clubs during his career Tarmon, Castlerea, Portarlington, Creggs and Fr. Griffins,” said Danny.

He was treasurer of the Castlerea GAA Club in 1962 and 1963. He was an U-21 selector in 1968 and 1970 when the club won two county titles. He won a senior county championship with Castlerea in 1967 and on that team were his great friends, Jackie Cleary and Adrian O'Sullivan, who also travelled all over the country to football matches with him.

Danny went on to recall that Harry was also a great singer and sang with the Marist Brothers Choir. He was also a member of the Castlerea Church Choir for 25 years. He was a member of Castlerea Musical Society and took part in ten shows. He also took part in a few plays.

“Harry, you have now gone to join your wife Celia, parents Michael and Agnes, brothers, Kieran and Sean, nephew, Keith, sisters-in-law Kay and Annette and many of your friends. It was a pleasure to be your friend all those years so until we meet again, slan,” concluded Danny.
