Local Notes: Holy Week ceremonies, recent deaths and spring clean-up

Thumbs up for Mary: Mary Burke from Hillstreet was delighted with her Employee Excellence win at the Irish Restaurant Awards as the Cryan’s Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon nominee. Known by customers and colleagues alike for her big welcoming smile, the very popular winner has trained many members of staff in her 30 years of service. Well done to the Sixth Class boys who made history recently by becoming the first boys’ team from Abbeycartron NS to play in the Cumann na MBunscol Ros Comáin hurling competitions. The boys got off to a great start, winning their first game, playing some great hurling and despite coming out on the wrong side in their last three games, they did themselves and the school proud. Thanks to Padraig and Majella from St.Bride’s NS, Ballintubber for organising a brilliant day.
The death has occurred on April 9th, peacefully, with his family by his side, in the wonderful care of all the staff at Ait Aoibhinn, Parke, County Mayo of Mr Vincent Monaghan, Windmill Road and Skeagh, Elphin. Son of the late Virgie and Matt and brother of the late Maura. Vincent will be sadly missed by his loving sisters, Dympna and Nuala; brothers, Mike, Martin and Tony; brother-in-law, Ray; sisters-in-law, Mary and Dorothy; nephews, Rónán and Ruairí; nieces, Sorcha and Alicia; special friends, Mary Goldrick and Martin Reilly (Ait Aoibhinn) and Mary Tarmey, relatives, neighbours and friends. Following Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Elphin on Monday Vincent was laid to rest in Caldra Cemetery.
Rehearsals have commenced for a Community Arts and Drama Society show on May 17th in Elphin Community Centre. It promises to be a great night with many groups in the community involved in the production.
The death occurred on April 11th, peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family, of Mrs Margaret (Pearl) Maher,(née McCrann), Knockaulin Drive, Ferbane, Offaly and late of Elphin. Margaret, who was fondly known as Pearl, was predeceased by her beloved husband Michael, daughter Ursula, grandson Shay, and sisters, Ursula and Pauline. Pearl will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by her loving family, Teresa, Dolores, Patrick, Jacinta, Marguerite, Anne, Michelle and Emmett; her adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Colm; sons-in-law, Eugene, Larry, John, Anton, and Mark; sister-in-law, Ina, nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours and friends. Following Requiem Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ferbane on Monday interment took place in High Street Cemetery.
A huge thanks to Elphin Bridge Club who held a charity night last Thursday and made a very generous donation to the day centre. The centre really appreciates any donation received that helps to continue the centre’s very important service.
A bus to the Connacht semi-final in Salthill for the Roscommon v Galway game on Sunday, April 20th is being organised. A bus departs Elphin from outside the Bóthar Rua at approximately 11 a.m. to return that evening. To book your seat contact John on 083 8613674. It’s first come first served so don’t delay, promises to be a great day out.
Easter Bingo takes place in Elphin Community Centre on Monday, April 21st at 3 p.m. with €3,000 in prizes, hampers and spot prizes. Single book €10, double book €15.

Line dancing with Shannon takes place in An Bothar Rua every Wednesday at 8 p.m.. It’s great fun and everyone is welcome, it’s also a great workout.
An Easter tennis camp will run this week at Kiltrustan, in the afternoons for an hour each day, with Tennis Ireland qualified and Garda Vetted coach Sean Gilrane. Just give him a text on 0876085654 to book.
Recycle your unwanted clothing and help raise funds for Abbeycartron National School. Drop off location is Abbeycartron NS (only on the following dates). May 1st and 2nd, 9.20 a.m., 2.10 p.m. and 3.10 p.m.; Saturday, May 3rd at 10 a.m., clothing, curtains, belts, handbags, paired shoes accepted.
The Windmill Classic will take place on Sunday, June 8th from Elphin Community Centre, €30 for CI members, €20 non-members. Hot food served afterwards. Updates and information on Facebook and Instagram pages. The 100k starts at 9 a.m., 50k starts 9.30 a.m.. Proceeds this year will go to the Elphin Windmill repair fund following damage caused by Storm Eowyn.
The regular Tuesday night music sessions start at 8.30 p.m. and, again, everyone is welcome. The next junior music session in the Tower Inn is due to take place on Easter Sunday, April 20th at 7 p.m. and all junior musicians will be made very welcome provided they are accompanied by a parent. The quality of the music at the junior sessions recently has been very good and deserves ongoing support so come along for an enjoyable evening. The next singers’ night in the Tower Inn will be on Easter Sunday at 9 p.m.. All singers will be made very welcome with all genre of singing being catered for. If you are a singer join in with a friendly gathering and if you are not a singer then come along for a great night of enjoyable entertainment.

Holy Week Ceremonies in Croghan parish will take place as follows: Holy Thursday in Croghan Church at 7 p.m.; Good Friday, Croghan Church at 3 p.m., Drumlion 4.30 p.m.; Easter Vigil (Saturday), Croghan 7 p.m., Drumlion 8.30 p.m.; Easter Sunday, Croghan 10 a.m., Patrician Hall, Cortober 12 noon.

A Spring Clean-up will take place in the Cortober area on Friday, April 18th at 10 a.m.. Meet up at the Patrician Hall. All support for the clean-up most welcome.
Congratulations to the children from Croghan parish who received the Sacrament of Confirmation in Cootehall Church on Tuesday, April 8th.
A 6K Run/Walk and 12K Run will take place around Cavetown Lake on Monday, May 5th. Registration 9 a.m. and event commencing at 10 a.m.. Entry €10, family €20. Raffle, spot prizes and refreshments. Proceeds to Cavetown Amenity Centre Repair Fund. All support much appreciated.
Last week's winner of the Shannon Gaels GAA Club 50/50 draw was Geraldine Kelly who won €700. Thanks to all who support the draw, it is much appreciated.
