Local Notes: Irish Language Classes, Sponsor A Seat, Ging's Bar Reopens

Elphin Area Community Enterprise CLG (Elphin Windmill Committee) would like to share a quick update on the ongoing repairs. The question the committee get asked most: "When are the sails going back ...or will they at all?" The answer is yes and it’s getting closer. Work hasn't stopped since Storm Eowyn and is still ongoing. Behind the scenes the planning has been immense from a mountain of paperwork, the massive task of removing the windshaft for offsite repair, building new sails and at present the damaged thatch is being repaired. A sincere thank you to everyone who helped get to this milestone. Every contribution of time, help, and support is greatly appreciated. The committee will keep people updated as the next stages take shape. Revised opening and closing times are Monday-Sunday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. for September. Please note that these times may change. Elphin CCE is holding a Fancy Dress Halloween Sets Céilí on Saturday, October 31st at 9 p.m. in Elphin Community Centre. Music by the Pipers Cross Céilí Band. Come as anything or anyone you like — superheroes, movie characters, cowboys, pirates, famous faces, the 70s, 80s or 90s, matching groups, something completely ridiculous… the more imaginative, the better. Fancy dress isn’t compulsory, but it is very strongly encouraged for adults and children — and organisers would especially love to see whole sets getting creative together. Prizes for Best Dressed Adult, Best Dressed Child. Best Dressed Set. Raffle, refreshments, live music and plenty of dancing. All ages welcome — dancers, families, friends and spectators. Come along and be part of the first one.
Irish language classes for adults will resume again this autumn in Cruachan Ai (F45HH51) Tulsk. The classes will begin on Wednesday, October 7th from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This course is suitable for all levels with an emphasis on conversational Irish. Beginners are welcome. It will run every Wednesday for six weeks with a break for midterm. For further information contact Maire, 086 6095402.
Elphin GAA is looking for seat sponsors. For a contribution of €150 your family name or that of a loved one will be prominently displayed on a seat in the club’s new stand. After a very enjoyable summer season of trad sessions all associated with the Tuesday (8.30 p.m.) night music sessions in the Tower Inn are looking forward to the longer nights and the greater sense of togetherness that goes with the long nights trad music sessions. They are also looking forward to meeting new and old friends whether young or old be they musician or listener all will be made very welcome with a great night assured for all.
The next in the series of singers’ nights in the Tower Inn will take place on Sunday, September 27th at 8.30 p.m.. All singers and genre of singing will be catered for. These singers nights have proved to be very enjoyable over the years and all singers and listeners will be welcome and experience a wonderful night, so come along and join in.
Saturday meetings of Tidy Towns will resume at the Polytunnel shortly. All welcome. Thanks also to everyone who sponsors the work of the group. The committee would love to have some new volunteers. If you are new to Elphin it is a great way to meet people. Volunteers do an hour on Saturdays.

A meeting of Cortober Residents Association will be held on this Tuesday, September 15th at 8 p.m. in the Patrician Hall. New members welcome to attend.
The death occurred on Sunday, September 6th at the North West Hospice, Sligo, of Mrs Eileen McDermott (née Carroll), Dacklin, Carrick-on-Shannon and formerly of Either, Virginia, County Cavan. Wife of the late Seamus, Eileen will be sadly missed by her daughter, Jo; sons, John, Gerry, Enda, Dermot and Austin; daughters-in-law, May and Catherine; grandchildren, great-grandchild, sister Bridget, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends. Predeceased by her son-in-law Eamon, sisters, Mary and Rose and brothers Patsy, Tom, Jim, Oliver and Mark. Following reposal at her daughter's residence in Carrick-on-Shannon on Monday, September 7th, removal took place to St. Michael's Church, Drumlion on Tuesday for funeral Mass with interment afterwards in Drumlion cemetery.

The death occurred on Thursday, September 3rd, at Mallow General Hospital, of Mr Val Keane, Kanturk, County Cork and formerly of Dacklin, Carrick-on-Shannon. Val will be sadly missed by his wife, Lily, sons, daughters, grandchildren, brothers, John and Des, sisters Tess and Anne, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. He was predeceased by his sisters Mai, Sr. Ita, Rita and Vera, and his brothers P.J. and Michéal. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Sunday, September 6th in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kanturk followed by interment in St. Patrick's cemetery, Kanturk.

Best wishes to Benny Whelan and family on the re-opening of Ging's Bar, Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon. A fire in 2022 resulted in major damage to the premises. The bar re-opened on Saturday, September 5th, 2026 following extensive renovations.
