Local Notes: Launch of childcare report, One Town One Voice and Aquathon at Lough Key

Communities and organisations across County Roscommon are coming together this week, June 9th to June 15th to mark International Men’s Health Week 2025. This year’s theme 'Shoulder-to-Shoulder: Connecting for Health' highlights the importance of community and connection in supporting men’s wellbeing. Across County Roscommon, a diverse programme of events will offer men of all ages the chance to engage, learn and to take proactive steps towards better health. On Friday, June 13th Boyle Family Resource Centre will host ‘It starts with a conversation!’ from 12:45 p.m.-2 p.m. with free health checks from Croí, information packs, guest speaker Cian Smith, no booking necessary.
Boyle Family Resource Centre will host the launch of the Boyle Community Childcare needs analysis, which presents key findings and insights critical to understanding current gaps, challenges, and opportunities in the evolving childcare needs of Boyle town and region. The launch will take place on Friday, June 13th at 10 a.m.. The report was commissioned in response to recognised shifts in the economic and social dynamics of the area, with multiple support and service providers highlighting an increasing demand for accessible and targeted childcare services, alongside families reporting an increasing challenge in accessing childcare.

From scorching sunshine to driving rain, Boyle AC athletes took it all in their stride recently. Well done to Eileen Comer who ran a strong race at the Drumkeeran 8K on Saturday, May 31st. Eileen finished in an impressive 48 minutes …great running!
A huge congratulations to Ruth Harbison on completing her first marathon in Cork on Sunday, June 1st. The 26.2-mile challenge was made even tougher by the cruel heat, but Ruth showed incredible stamina and determination to finish in an impressive time of 5:16. A phenomenal achievement on a demanding course.
Also on Sunday, June 1st thousands took to the streets of Dublin for the iconic VHI Women’s Mini Marathon, the largest all-women event of its kind in the world. Well done Sinead McQuaid who showed remarkable resilience by finishing strong despite taking a fall at the 3K mark and injuring her elbow. A true display of grit and determination..
The Ballymote 5K, hosted by Corran Athletic Club on Monday, June 2nd was hit with heavy rain and strong winds. But that didn’t stop Damien Conan and Helen Beirne , who powered through the storm to finish at the business end of the field. Damien clocked a great time of 19:05, placing 16th overall, while Helen delivered a brilliant run in 20:27 to win her age category.

The monthly memory cafe will take place at the Lough Key Forest Park Boyle, on Wednesday, June 18th June, from 2 p.m., to 4 p.m., and on July 16th from 2 p., to 4 p.m.. A local community group from Boyle made its way to Athlone on May 25th to take part in the inaugural One Town One Voice national singing celebration. Established in February this year, the Boyle One Voice Singers group aims to bring everyone in the community to sing together regardless of nationality, ethnicity or legal status. There are now over 20 One Town One Voice singing groups across Ireland and the initiative is overseen by the Family Resource Centre National Forum. Boyle One Voice Singers would love more people in the town and surroundings to join with them. They meet every Thursdays in Boyle Family Resource Centre from 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.. A Fourball Betterball format competition was the main event for the men over the June Bank Holiday weekend. The winners were the Killian Cox and Kieran Cox, with 49 points. Mark Whelan and Jonathan Egan were next with 47 and in third place were Liam Whyte and Mark Feehan. Sunday, June 15th is the date set aside for the President’s Prize to the men and will be played in its usual format of 18 Hole Stroke with the top scorers going out again for a 9 hole playoff that evening, followed by the prize giving immediately after. This year’s president is Jim Callery. The men’s weekly continues every Thursday as a 12 Hole Stableford.

Lough Key will host the second round of the Midland’s Aquathon series 2025 on this Wednesday, June 11th. The series takes place every Wednesday evening in June and first week in July, with a different club hosting the event with a 7.30 p.m. start time. The distance is 750m open water swim followed by a 5 Km run. There is also a shorter option with a 250m swim and 5 km run. The short option is ideal for anyone new to triathlon. A relay team is also an option. Entry is €10 and is confined to current members of the five clubs involved or any other triathlon club. Triathlon Ireland membership is also required.

The death occurred on June 2nd, peacefully, in the wonderful care of the staff in the Plunkett Community Nursing Home, Boyle of Mrs Nora Mulligan, (née Flannery), Grange, Boyle and formerly of Scramogue. She was predeceased by her husband, Michael, her brother, Paddy and her sister, Mary Kneeshaw. Nora is sadly missed and remembered with love by her daughter, Margaret; sons, John, Tom and Frank; sister, Anne McDermott; grandchildren, John, Frank and Lisa; daughters-in-law, Una and Xiomara; brother-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbours and many friends. Following Mass of the Resurrection in St. Joseph’s Church, Boyle on Thursday burial took place in Killaraght Old Cemetery.
