Congratulations to Cllr Liam Callaghan from Rathmoyle, Lisalway who was elected Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council at the local authority’s AGM last Monday. The son of the late Cllr Tom Callaghan who sadly passed away just under a month ago, Liam becomes the second father and son combination to hold the office of the county’s first citizen. The late Cllr Tom Callaghan was elected Cathaoirleach in 1996-97. In becoming Cathaoirleach, Cllr Callaghan becomes the third Tulsk person to hold the office of first citizen, following in the footsteps of his father and former Cllr Sean Beirne, of Derryphatten, who held the chain of office in 1992-93. Cllr. Callaghan was formally proposed for the role by fellow parishioner and party colleague, Cllr Ruth Conboy. Meanwhile at the AGM of the Boyle Municipal District Cllr Sean Moylan of Castleland was elected unopposed as chairman of the local Municipal District for the next twelve months. Cllr Moylan, who was first elected to Roscommon County Council last year, succeeds Cllr. Tom Crosby in the role. Both men are wished every success by all of the local community and will no doubt serve the role and indeed the community with great purpose and dignity.

Mike McCarthy has worked for over ten years as a tour guide, research assistant and deputy manager of the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre and has been re-telling the story of Queen Medb in halls, lecture theatres and on top of ancient raths for years.
