Local Notes: Line dancing, storm support and volunteers needed

LINE DANCING 

Line dancing with Mildred Beirne takes place every Wednesday evening in Frenchpark Hall from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. for beginners and 8 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. for advanced dancers. Come and join us for a great night of fun and dancing.

LATE MR REGGIE MARTIN

 The death took place in the United States, following an illness, of Mr Reginald Martin, Belmar, New Jersey and late of Frenchpark on Wednesday, January 22nd last. Known locally as Reggie, he was predeceased by his father Frankie in 1999, sister Anita Maryrose and his brother Nigel who both died in 2019. He will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his heartbroken mother, Norah; brothers, Frank, Keith, Malcolm, Alistair, Roland, Tyrone, Ivan and Neilson; sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and a large circle of friends. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on this Tuesday (today) at 11 a.m. in St. Asicus' Church Frenchpark, followed by burial afterwards in Cloonshanville Cemetery.

LATE MR BILL SMYTH 

Mr William Smyth, Leggatinty, Frenchpark passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31st last at the North-West Hospice. In his eighty sixth year, Bill was a popular member of the local farming community and was pre-deceased by his parents, John and Annie; sisters, Lilly and Rita and his brother, John. He will be sadly missed and remembered by his brother, Tony, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. His remains were removed from the Sharkey Funeral Home to St. Asicus’ Church, Frenchpark on Sunday evening last. Following Funeral Mass on Monday, February 3rd, Bill was laid to rest in Drummin Cemetery, Ballinagare.

LATE MR JIMMY LOWRY 

The peaceful death occurred of Mr James Lowry, Lissergool, Tibohine on Monday, January 27th last at University Hospital, Roscommon. Known locally as Jimmy, he was in his 85th year and was pre-deceased by his son, Vincent in December, 2009. He is survived by his heartbroken family, his wife Pauline, daughters, Ann (Giblin) and Mary (Duffy), sons, Andrew, J.J, and Stephen, grandchildren sisters, Teresa, Ann and Patsy, extended family, relatives, neighbours and many friends. His remains were removed from The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen to St. Beiithin’s Church, Tibohine on Friday evening last. Following Requiem Mass on Saturday, February 1st last, the funeral proceeded to Tibohine New Cemetery.

Pray for the repose of the souls of Miss Fiona Casey, Aughalustia, Ballaghaderreen (sister of Rachel Martin, Sheepwalk and Ann Casey, Portahard), Mrs Colette Martin, New Jersey, USA (sister of Teresa Duffy & Ursula Mulleady, Ballinagare), Mr Tommy Bruen, Main Street, Castlerea; Mr Denis Law, Scotland and Ms Sinead Loughran, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. May they rest in peace.

CHURCH NEWS 

Masses will be held in Tibohine at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (4th), in Frenchpark at 7 p.m. on Thursday (6th), in Ballinagare at 7 p.m. on Friday (7th), in Tibohine at 6.30 p.m. and Ballinagare at 8 p.m. on Saturday (8th) and in Frenchpark at 10 a.m. and Fairymount at 11.30am on Sunday (9th). Visits to the sick and housebound will take place in Fairymount & Tibohine on Thursday (6th) and in Frenchpark & Ballinagare on Friday, February 7th.

LOTTO 

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, February 1st last. There was no winner of the jackpot. The numbers drawn were 5, 24, 31 and 35. The next draw (jackpot €7,900) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on Saturday, February 8th next. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.

RECYCLABLE RETURN BIN 

Parishioners who wish to drop in their empty plastic bottles and/or tins with the Recyclable Logo Return are welcome to do so every Monday. The yellow bin will be at Tibohine National School gate during school hours. For security it will be taken in after school. It is planned to use the funds generated to buy maintenance products and tools for the upkeep of the school. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

TULSK 

LOCAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE FOLLOWING STORM 

While power has been restored to most homes in the locality, residents are reminded that supports are available for the community who may still be without power. Tulsk Digi-Hub is open for those who may need support such as phone recharging facilities, internet or water. The offices, located in the building where Tulsk Laundry services provide their service, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m..

RATHCROGHAN VISITOR CENTRE 

Well done to the management and staff of the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre who last weekend hosted a series of lectures marking St. Brigid’s Weekend. Archaeologist Tamlyn McHugh began by speaking of St Brigid’s Holy Wells in County Roscommon and their customs, cures and sacred waters. This was followed by an equally informative lecture from Elaine Conroy on the theme of Women in the Story of Roscommon.

LATE MRS RITA SHARKEY 

 Local residents will have been saddened to learn of the death of Mrs Margaret (Rita) Sharkey (née Gilligan), late of Gloria Cavetown, Croghan, Boyle who worked at Tulsk Laundry Services. As a mark of respect, Tulsk Laundry Services were closed on Friday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.. The deceased is survived by her husband, James Sharkey; children, Noel, Paula, Katie, Beth, James and Lauren; sister, Norrie Drury and brother, PJ Gilligan, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, many friends and neighbours. The deceased reposed at the residence of Noel and Paula Sharkey, Cavetown before removal for Funeral Mass in St.Michael's Church, Croghan, followed by burial immediately afterwards in Eastersnow Cemetery.

BANK HOLIDAY 

Last weekend was the St. Brigid’s or February Bank Holiday weekend. There were increased traffic volumes through the village at the weekend, particularly on Friday and again yesterday (Monday) evening. It’s hoped all visitors to the parish, whether visiting family or friends or merely passing through the village had a safe and enjoyable experience.

GAA REGISTRATION 

Registration for membership of Tulsk GAA club is now being collected. Fees are €80 for adult players, €60 for non-players and Scór participants, €50 for students with ID and children under eighteen years of age and €160 for a family of two adults and all players under eighteen in that family. Registration can be made online at www.foireann.ie or by contacting club Registrar Sarah Conry on 087-2998156 for further assistance.

TULSK ICA 

The Tulsk ICA Guild meet this evening (Tuesday, February 4th) in Tulsk Macra Hall. New members always welcome, see their Facebook page for further details.

SYMPATHY 

The sympathies of the local community are extended to Margaret McDermott on the passing of her sister Concepta (Connie) Gill (nee Coen), late of Ullard, Portarlington, County Laois and formerly of Boyle. The deceased’s family, namely her late father Michael and her late brothers Michael and Liam farmed land in the Tulsk area for many years and were well known and well regarded in the local community. Predeceased by her parents Michael and Mary, brothers Liam and Michael, the deceased is survived by her husband, Brendan, daughters, Grainne and Eimear, son Michael, sisters Margaret, Kathleen and Mary, aunts Annie and Patricia, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends. The deceased reposed at her residence in Ullard Portarlington before removal to St John's Church, Killenard for Requiem Mass with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED 

The charity ALONE is seeking volunteers to provide companionship or make friendly calls to older persons in the community. The commitment is for one hour per week. CRHAS 

The February meeting of the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society (CRHAS) will take place in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Tulsk, on Tuesday, February 11th. All members are invited to attend – new members are always welcome.

IRISH LANGUAGE CLASSES 

Irish Language Classes for adults will continue in Cruachan Ai (F45HH51) Tulsk this evening Tuesday, February 4th from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m..
