The death occurred in Barnsley, South Yorkshire on Saturday, January 11th, peacefully, of Fr. Seamus Shryane, formerly of New Street, Ballaghaderreen. The deceased was in his sixtieth year of ministry in the priesthood. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Nora and his brothers, Tommy and Edward. Sadly missed and remembered with love by his sisters, Frances (Mullooly), Catherine (McDonnell) and Attracta (Butler); brothers-in-law, Seamus, Michael and Martin; sister-in-law, Eithne; his nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, bishop and priests of the dioceses of Hallam and Achonry, his extended family, neighbours and many friends. The soccer club’s 50/50 weekly draw took place on Tuesday, January 14th at the Community Park Clubhouse. The jackpot of €255 was won by Siobhan and Declan – seller – Solans. They will have a chance to win €1,000 if they can pick the joker after the 50/50 draw on Tuesday at the Community Park. Next draw takes place on this Tuesday, January 21st at the Community Park Clubhouse. The family support drop-in clinic is a service that is open to all parents, guardians or any family member who is experiencing any type of issue or problem within the family. This is a safe and confidential space to seek support, advice and guidance on issues arising in everyday life. This is an inter-agency project with Tusla Family Support Workers. Clinics are on Mondays from 9.30 a.m. – 12 noon at Ballaghaderreen Family Resource Centre, New Street, F45 EK13 No appointment necessary.

Living Well is a free HSE programme which helps people living with a long-term health condition to manage their condition and improve their overall well-being. Anyone with any chronic illness such as diabetes, arthritis, COPD, cardiac illness, anxiety, etc. can benefit from these workshops. The next programme commences in Ballaghaderreen on January 24th. Looking to dispose of all your used batteries? If you want to do your bit and recycle then the CE Scheme can help as they have boxes in The Shambles to be filled, so they can be recycled. Once the boxes are filled just simply return them to reception and they will take care of them.
A new Irish language club for children aged 7-12 years of age is starting in Ballaghaderreen. Games, arts and crafts, drama and music and lots of fun! Places are limited. Due to the large volume of uptake, the Shop Local Campaign will run throughout January in order to facilitate all the contributors. The Shop Local Campaign was a huge success with businesses reporting high engagement from local customers. Ballaghaderreen businesses, clubs societies artists and charities have signed up to be promoted online while sharing and liking content and increasing exposure creating an online community that benefits the town and users alike. The Women’s Shed will be meeting again on this Tuesday, January 21st from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Community Park. Members will be making St Brigid’s Crosses in advance of the holiday weekend. The Ballaghaderreen Support Group would like to thank all who took part in the recent fun walk. The event raised €900, which is much appreciated by the Hospice.
The death took place unexpectedly at his residence at Knockgrania on January 16th of Mr PJ McKeon. News of his passing was received with great sadness as he was a popular member of the community and far beyond. He was a sales rep for Candon's of Boyle for many years and had many interests including Gaelic football. He was treasurer for Eastern Harps Club which he helped from its beginning. He was predeceased by his son, Kerry in December 2012 and his brother, Joseph in November 2020. His remains reposed at the O'Dowd Funeral Home, Gurteen on Saturday evening with removal from his home on Sunday afternoon to St. Patrick's Church for his Funeral Mass with burial afterwards in Gurteen Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Amanda; sons, David and Karl; son-in-law, Rory; daughters -in-law, Denise and Maire; grandchildren, brother Michael; sisters, Mary, Sarah and Attracta; extended family and many friends. May he rest in Peace.

The death took place of Kathleen Sherlock aged 94 on November 29th,at Woodside, New York a native of Carrentemple, Gurteen. Sympathy to her sisters, Joan Texas and Anne, New York.
Crib donations from the churches in Gurteen parish will go to aid to church in need, both for Gaza and for nuns who care for orphans and refugees in Ukraine. Well done for generous and kind donations.

Gurteen Celtic’s jackpot of €7,000 wasn’t won on Sunday, January 12- numbers drawn were -1, 16,22, 26 and the €50 went to Gertrude Doddy, Gurteen. The jackpot is now €7,100.
