The lecture will reveal aspects of Gibbon’s own colourful life and character, as discovered recently by the speaker. Anybody unfamiliar with Skeffington Gibbon’s work, ‘The Recollections of Skeffington Gibbon from 1796 to 1829 of the Lives and Characters of the Nobility and Gentry of Roscommon’, can read it for free online. At its time, it was a publication which must have caused great unease and anxiety among the nobility and gentry, and left those hoping their activities were not included! Members of the public are warmly invited to attend this lecture the Society’s first of the 2024-25 season.
