Local Notes: New Principal, Healing Mass and Community Meeting

Mr Padraig Carney, Carrownderry, Kiltoom, has been appointed Principal of Ballybay National School, Kiltoom, effective from August 26th last. Son of Tommy and Angela Carney, Ballagh, Rahara, he has been Princial of Scoil Mhuire, Ardeevin, Glenamaddy, since 2016. Prior to that he was attached to the teaching staff of Scoil Bhride, Edenderry, Co. Offaly, for six years. He is a past pupil of Rahara National School and St Aloysius College, Athlone. He completed his teacher training at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. An avid sports enthusiast, he coaches St Dominick's (Knockcroghery, St John's and Rahara) GAA Club members at under-age level and he was a long serving playing member of Rahara Rovers Soccer Club in his younger days. His wife Grace is attached to the teaching staff of Ballyforan National School.
The death took place recently at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, of Mr John (Johnny) Mc Donnell, Carramore, Dysart. Aged 86 on April 3rd last, he was one of the most respected senior citizens resident in the Dysart area. A sheep and beef farmer, he also worked part-time as an agricultural contractor and he was held in high regard among the farming community for the quality of his workmanship, his innate decency and integrity in all his dealings with the farming community. He took a keen interest in current affairs and all farming affairs and was an engaging conversationalist on a one to one basis. Over the decades, he supported all Church and community activities and a wide range of charitable causes and bequests with typical self effacement. He was also a most obliging neighbour and his affability enabled him to make friendships with a wide age range. A member of a farming family of three boys and two girls, he is survived by one brother, Right Rev. Mons Martin Mc Donnell, retired, New Jersey, one sister, Mary, Carramore, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at St Patrick's Church, Dysart, on Tuesday, August 18th, the burial took place in Dysart Cemetery. The principal celebrant of the Mass was Right Rev. Mons Martin, brother of the deceased. The other celebrant was Very Rev. Francis Beirne, PP, Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara.
The death took place on Thursday, August 13th, at her residence of Mrs Frances Ryan, Thomastown, Athlone. Aged 69 in October last, she was the former Ms Frances Foley, Taughmaconnell, and she bore her final short illness with characteristic dignity and resilence. Her untimely death at a comparatively early age has caused widespread sorrow and regret amongst her immediate and extended family, neighbours and wide circle of friends. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was noted for performing neighbourly deeds in her residential catchment. An engaging conversationalist, she was a trustworthy friend to a wide age range. An accomplished golfer, she was a long time member of the Thomastown Golf Society and the Society cancelled the Brian Lenihan Memorial competition to later dates as a mark of respect to the deceased and her family. The deceased also enjoyed ballroom dancing as a hobby alongside her husband Christy and they were in the winners enclosure on a number of occasions in ballroom dancing competitions. A devout Catholic, she supported a number of Church linked and community activities and performed innumerable acts of Christian charity in the course of her life. She is survived by her husband Christy, a native of Camcloon, Ballydangan; daughter, Mrs Mary Weetch, Perth, Australia and son, Enda, London. She is also survived by her son-in-law Jamie; brother Willie, Dundonnell, Taughmaconnell; sisters, Kathleen, Hawthorn Close, Ballinasloe; Mrs Maureen Mc Garry, Frenchpark; Mrs Margaret Cummins, Attyrory, Creagh, grandchildren, Frank and Lily; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at St Brigid's Church, Drum, on Monday, August 17th, the burial took place in Drum Cemetery. The celebrants of the Mass were Very Rev. John Deignan, PP, Ss Peter and Paul, Athlone and Rev. Joseph Wenjeslaus, CC, Drum.
The death took place on Sunday, August 16th, of Mr Roger (Rory) Moore, Stoughton, MA, USA, who was a native of Carrenterriffe, Dysart. Aged 89 on June 2nd last, he was an electrician by trade and his all round competence in that work arena meant that he was much in demand for his skills up until his retirement. Devoted to his immediate and extended family, he was a regular visitor to his extended family members in Dysart and elsewhere up until recent years. He was a follower of Irish music, song and dance and a founder member of the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton, Boston, and one of its mainstays over the decades. A Gaelic games enthusiast,he remained a lifelong follower of all Roscommon GAA panels. He is survived by his wife Veronica (nee Tarpey, Ballyhaunis) sons, Stepehen, Boston; Paul, Boston, and daughter, Karen, Boston. He is also survived by his twin sister, Sister Lena, Convent of Mercy, Roscommon; Sister Rita, Columban Sisters, Wicklow; brothers, George, Dysart; Francis, Boston; Vincent, Boston, Joe, Kellysgrove, Ballinasloe; granddaughter, Anna, Boston; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Requiem Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church, Stoughton, MA, on Tuesday, August 25th, the burial took place in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton, MA.
The death took place unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 18th, of Mr Aidan Lee Senior, "Lawbaun" Mount Temple, Moate, who was brother of the late Rev. Hugh Lee, MHM, who ministered as a CC for 27 years in the Curraghboy-Cam area of the Parish of Kiltoom and Cam up until his death in May of 2018. Fr Lee was the longest serving CC ever to minister in the Curraghboy-Cam area. The Lee family were native to Dignavanty, Cootehill, Co. Cavan and the deceased resided in family setting at Retreat Heights, Athlone, before taking up residence in Mount Temple. A devoted family person, he enjoyed the respect and esteem of all those with whom he became acquainted. He was predeceased by his wife Anne, brothers, Pat, Michael, Fr Hugh, MHM; Fr Terry, MHM, New York; Tommy, Eddie and Brendan, and sister, Mrs Annie Montgomery. He is survived by sons, Terry and Aidan Junior; daughters, Mrs Sharon Daly and Victoria; sisters, Mary (Miami, USA); Mrs Jo Patterson, Ballybay, Co. Monaghan; seven grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Requiem Mass at Corpus Christi Church, Mount Temple, on Saturday, August 22nd, the burial took place in Donegan Cemetery. A Special Family Tree Healing Mass will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea Prayer Centre, Curraghboy on Monday, 7th September commencing at 8 p.m. The Celebrant will be Fr. John Walsh. Confessions will be available from 6.30 p.m. and the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet will be recited at 7.30 p.m. Fr. John will Bless Holy Water and all Religious items before Mass.
