Local Notes: Painting Classes, Carniska Church Painted, Lough Derg Pilgrimage

CARNISKA CHURCH PAINTED 

Grateful thanks are extended to Teresa Barrow and parishioners for their generous contributions towards the painting of St. Mary's Church, Carniska. The church looks beautiful and without support this would not have been possible. The amount raised came to €6,108 with Strokestown Hardware contributing €1,583 and individual contributions of €4,525. The work cost €4,000 and paint €1,470 which leaves a balance of €638.

SCDA FORTNIGHTLY DRAW 

Results of the SCDA fortnightly draw held on April 28th - numbers drawn - 4 5,8, 15.. One Match Three winner -John Noone, Cloonerra. Next draw is on Tuesday, May 12th at the SCDA office. Jackpot, €1,050. Thank you for your continued support.

LOUGH DERG PILGRIMAGE 

The Achonry and Elphin three day pilgrimage to Lough Derg will take place from Friday, June 12th to Sunday, June 14th. More details including bus options at www,elphindiocese.ie/lough-derg. All welcome.

LOURDES PILGRIMAGE 

The Achonry and Elphin Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will take place from August 28th to September 2nd, 2026, inclusive. Nominations for the youth section are being sought from young people. Nominees who are between 17 and 20 are welcome. Nominees must be 17 years of age or over on August 20th, 2026. Forms are available from the parish office. All Nominees will be representing their parish and expected to fully participate in the pilgrimage itinerary. Closing date for receipt of completed nominations is May 24th. Those who travel as part of the assisted pilgrim section will stay in Accueil Notre Dame, which is situated near the Grotto and sanctuary area. They will be cared for by the Diocesan Pilgrimage Care Team while in Lourdes. Application forms and full details are available from Fr. LATE BEAN MAIRE NI CHONGHAILE 

The death took place recently at Galway Hospice of Bean Maire Ni Chonghaile (nee Mary Connellan) of An Caladh,Gearr, Knock, Inverine, County Galway. A native of Strokestown, she was daughter of the late Mr James A. Connellan, solicitor, and of the late Mrs Annie Frances Connellan (nee Hughes), L.D.S., dental surgeon, formerly of Elphin Street. The family subsequently re-located to Roscommon Town. News of her passing was heard of with deep sadness among her former neighbours and a large circle of friends. She was predeceased by her brothers, John and Liam. A celebration of life ceremony followed by cremation took place at Shannon Crematorium. She is survived by her husband, Micheal; sons, Donncha and Seamus; daughters-in-law, Antoinette and Lara; grandchildren, Meabh, Aoife, Darach, Isla and Gwen; sister, Rita; brothers, Dermot and Seamus; nieces, nephews, extended family and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

LATE MR JAMES GALLAGHER 

The death took place recently after a long illness bravely borne of Mr James Gallagher of Aughamana, Kilglass. Aged 49 years, he was younger son of Mr James Gallagher (formerly of Gortnalug, Mohill) and of Mrs Brigid Gallagher (nee Smyth, formerly of Rathmore, Aughnacliffe). His family previously resided at Elphin Street, Strokestown, where they conducted a drapery business. He was a past pupil of Scoil Mhuire Secondary School. News of his untimely passing was heard of with deep regret among his wide circle of friends, colleagues and neighbours Resomation took place at the Pure Reflections Resomarium, Abbeylands, Navan, County Meath. He is survived by his parents, brother, Eamonn (Carrick-in-Shannon); sister, Jeanna; niece, Annabel, and Mark (Bromley, London); aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.

ROOSKY/KILGLASS 

TRIP TO GLENDALOUGH 

A day bus trip to Glendalough will be held on Wednesday, May 20th, to include lunch and tour of Glendalough. Bus leaves Roosky Centre at 8.15 a.m.. For more details call 083 820 1967 or 087 654 7835.

KILGLASS GAELS LOTTO 

In the Kilglass Gaels Lotto held on April 25th the numbers drawn were: 7, 15, 21, 24, Bonus No 8. There was no jackpot winner. There were two Match 3 number winners of €100 each Peter & Ann Hanley, Darren McCullagh. Next week's jackpot €9,500 for four correct numbers, €13,500 for four correct numbers plus Bonus Number. Next draw takes place in the clubrooms on Saturday, May 16th.

KILGLASS GAELS LADIES BONUS BALL 

 This week's Kilglass Ladies Bonus Ball number was 18 . Winners Christy Farrell and Mary Donoghue, €50 each.

PROGRESSIVE 25 

Progressive 25 continues in Kilglass GAA Centre on Tuesdays at 9 p.m.. Last week's winners were: 1st, JP Farrell; 2nd, Charlie Reynolds; raffle, Tom Beirne. Sincere sympathy to Margaret and the Cox family on the sad passing of long time player John Joe. May he rest in peace.
