COMMUNITY CHOIR SUMMER CONCERT 

Castlerea Community Choir are back with a fantastic summer concert on Saturday, May 16th at 7 p.m. in Trinity Arts Centre. Hot Hits and Cool Harmonies from the hits of the last four decades. FINE GAEL AGM 

The AGM of the Castlerea Fine Gael branch will take place at 8.30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14th in McGourty's Bar (upstairs meeting room). New members wishing to join are welcome to attend on the night.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS' BASKETBALL FINALS 

The Roscommon primary schools’ basketball finals takes place this week. On Tuesday there are five games starting at 2 p.m. Local school Cloonboniffe plays Cloonequin at 4.00 p.m. in what should be a very close game in The Hub. There are four games on Wednesday starting at 3. p.m. with local school St Paul's favourites to beat Carrick. Also on Wednesday Ballinagare play Creggs at 6.00 p.m. with both schools reaching the finals for the first time.

SCHOOL FOOTBALL 

The Castlerea Community School First Year boys team had a good win over Clifden CS in the Connaught Colleges’ Division semi-final at Kilmeena on Wednesday, April 28th. The final score was Castlerea 7-13 and Clifden 3-9. This was a real team performance with all 17 players playing. Team manager Richie Britten with Mark Freeman and Danny Burke. They play St. Mary’s Belmont in the final on May 12th.

The Castlerea Community School’s boys juvenile team were defeated by Ballymote CCS in the Connaught Colleges’ Division D Demi-final at Drumshanbo on Thursday, April 30th on the scoreline of 3-12 to 2-10. The Castlerea boys put in a fine performance despite being short of two of their best players to injury ST. KEVIN’S MINOR TEAM The Castlerea St. Kevin’s minor team had a good win over Elphin/Ballinameen at O’Rourke Park on Tuesday, May 5th on the score of 4-18 to 2-4. The team and scorers are: Cian Bruen, Aaron Egan, Cian Fitzmaurice, Conor Larkin 0-1, Eddie Finneran, Alan Joyce, Tadgh Donlon, Seavn Vaughan 0-1, Ryan Dunleavy 1-0, Rory Hawkshaw 0-4, Dara Curran(captain) 0-6, Oisin Fleming, Diarmuid Fleming, Evan Kelly 1-3, Jack Dolan 2-3. Subs used Calum Walsh, manager, Aidan Fleming with Tommy Finneran, Michael Conroy, Michael Sweeney, Tom Vaughan, Peter Farrell. Team sponsor, Cahill’s SuperValu.

TRAD NIGHT 

There was another great trad night in Mulvihill’s on Sunday, April 26thwith Terry McGowan and his musicians Patsy Finan, Kevin Igoe Jr., Eamon Kelly , Denis Igoe, Paddy Joe Tighe, Rosin Igoe, Connie Kildea, Jimmy Moore, Ray McGeever, and Michael White. There were also a few songs from Fr. John McManus, Dixie Thompson, Patrick Lavin, Margaret White, Rosin Igoe, Ray McGeever, Eamon Kelly, Paddy Joe Tighe, Danny Burke and Michael White. Junior McLoughlin also performed his party piece.

LATE MR PATRICK JOSEPH O’DRISCOLL 

The death occurred peacefully on Tuesday, April 21st, after a long illness, at Roscommon University Hospital, of Mr Patrick Joseph O’Driscoll, Fearna Manor Apartments, Castlerea and formerly of Emlagh, Castlerea and Midleton, County Cork. Predeceased by his partner, Mary Blair, parents Patrick and Elizabeth, sister, Kathleen and his brothers, James, William and Michael. Deceased was a very kind and jolly person who loved to have conversations with people. He loved sport especially hurling and loved to talk about the great Christy Ring, the Mackey’s, John Doyle and the Rackards of Wexford, even though he was a Cork man. He was disappointed that Limerick did not win the five in a row last year. He loved driving his mobility scooter to town every day to do his shopping. He worked hard in his time both in Ireland and the UK. He came back from the UK with his partner to live in Castlerea in 2001. He will be sadly missed by his brother, John, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, relatives, and many friends. His remains were removed from Gaynor’s Funeral Home to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection burial took pace in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea. Before the final blessing his brother John read the eulogy. The ceremony was enhanced by the singing of the Castlerea Church Choir with organist Ena Conry. May Patsy’s gentle soul rest in peace.

LATE MRS DOREEN MURPHY 

The recent death occurred peacefully in the loving care of the staff of Aras Mhathair Phoil Castlerea, surrounded by her loving family, of Mrs Doreen Murphy (née Nevin), Knockroe, Castlerea and formerly of Cloonlish, Ballinlough and Birmingham. Predeceased by her beloved and adored husband Declan, her brother, Tom, her parents Tom and Catherine, her grandson, baby Declan and her grandnephew baby Darragh. Deceased was a very king, gentle and jolly person, a wonderful neighbour and anyone who frequented her home was always made most welcome and treated to the cup of tea, coffee, the scones or whatever was on the menu. She loved knitting, cooking and doing the crossword. She loved her family and was very proud of their achievements in life. She adored her grandchildren and loved when they would come to visit her. She was born in Birmingham where she resided for some years and worked for British Telecom before moving back to Ballinlough. She worked in Tully’s Hotel for a few years before taking up employment in St. Patrick’s Hospital, Castlerea, where she was highly thought of by her employers and work colleagues. Although she had an illness for the past few years, she bore it with great courage and dignity. She was a devoted Catholic and had a great devotion to Our Lady of Knock and visited the Shrine at Knock regularly. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will be lovingly remembered by her heartbroken children, Ann McDonald (Birr), Siobhan Morgan (Craughwell), John (Castlerea), Caitlin Hester (Castlerea), Thomas (Birr) and Declan (Dublin). Doreen will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her heartbroken children, her adored grandchildren, Leah, Eve, Emma, Matthew, Lillian, Declan, Ruby, Finn, Dexter, Rozalyn, MJ, Seamus and Zach; sons-in-law, Clifford, Enda and Ollie; daughter-in-law, Erin, John’s partner Valerie and Thomas’s partner Grace; her brothers and sisters, Eddie, (Ballinlough), Ellen (Garvey, Ballinlough), Michael (Navan), Catherine (Mattimoe, Boyle), Noel (New York), Louise (Kelly, Ballinlough), Bernadette (McHugh, Castlerea) and Theresa (Boylan, Ballinlough); brothers-in-law, Geno, Michael, Dermot; sisters-in-law, Grainne and Colleen, also, by the Murphy family, John and Lily Murphy Castlerea, Mairead and Owen McMahon (Dublin) and Michael Murphy and his partner Annmarie Carroll (Athlone), her nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, uncles, aunts, cousins, extended family, neighbours and friends. Her remains were removed from her home to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr. John McManus, burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea. Before the final blessing her son John read the Communion reflection ‘Miss me but let me go’ and the eulogy was read by her son Thomas. The ceremony was enhanced by the singing and music of Laura Kearney. May Doreen’s gentle soul rest in peace.
