Local Notes: Parade prizewinners, Daffodil Day and  Clooneyquinn NS concert

Thanks to the fire service personnel who freely gave of their time and energy for a car wash in aid of the Elphin Parade.

 What an amazing St. Patrick’s Day Parade and what a turnout, what a great community in Elphin It was just brilliant and so much fun. People were saying it was the biggest parade ever despite the very chilly conditions. Congratulations to Charlie Cox who was this year's Grand Marshal. Gordon Murray was in fine form and did a great job as always. Well done to Elphin St. Patrick's Day Parade committee, adjudicators, marshals, helpers, everyone who helped and to the people of Elphin who came out in force to support the committee. Special thanks to Carmel McLoughlin who entertained everyone with lovely music before the parade. Thanks to the main steward Kevin Farrell who kept traffic and parade entrants moving smoothly as always. Thanks to RTÉ who did some filming of the parade which was shown on the 6 p.m. news . The Roscommon Herald and Shannonside FM were also there. Thank you all. There are hundreds of photos on the Elphin-Our Town Facebook page and also a live feed of the parade. LATE MS MARY BEIRNE 

The death occurred on March 22nd peacefully, with her family by her side, in the wonderful care of Anna and her staff at Fearna Manor Nursing Home, Castlerea, of Ms Mary Beirne, Windmill Road, Elphin. She was predeceased by her parents, Bridie and Joe; infant brother, James and nephew, Christopher. Mary will be very sadly missed by her loving brothers Pat, John and Stephen; sister-in-law, Ruth, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Following Funeral Mass on Tuesday last in St. Patrick’s Church, Elphin Mary was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

CAR WASH IN AID OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE 

A great day was had at the recent fundraising car wash. Thank you as always to the firemen who turn out every year to do the car wash. Again from all the committee a big thank you to each and every one of you. Not forgetting all the little helpers that were there washing cars. A total of €2536.45 was raised.

DAFFODIL DAY 

Please support the great volunteers for Elphin's Daffodil Day on Friday, March 28th. Collection will take place in the usual place outside Eternal, on the Main Street.

COMMUNITY ARTS & DRAMA SOCIETY 

It has been decided that a variety show will proceed in May of 2025. Details later.

LINE DANCING 

 Line dancing takes place in An Bothar Rua every Wednesday at 8 p.m.. All welcome. It’s great fun, so come along.

CLOONEYQUINN NS CONCERT

Clooneyquinn NS will host a fundraising concert in the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown on Saturday, March 29th at 7.30 p.m.. All funds raised will go directly to the school. Great night of music with Cathy Jordan, Roscommon Men’s Choir and the fantastic Donoghue Brothers. Doors open 7 p.m..

RECYCLING INITIATIVE 

Abbeycartron NS is delighted to introduce a Return Recycling Bin as part of the school’s fundraising and environmental awareness initiative. Students, staff, and the community can donate empty plastic bottles and cans that have the Return symbol displayed. Every bottle and can collected will be recycled, and the funds raised will go directly towards supporting our school. This is a great way to help the environment while also contributing to school finances. Every small effort makes a big difference. Just bring along your bottle or can and pop it in the orange bin. Thank you for your support.

WINDMILL NEEDS MAJOR REPAIRS 

 Elphin windmill, the oldest operational windmill in Ireland, was substantially damaged during Storm Eowyn and needs major repairs. A historically and culturally significant site in the agricultural life of Ireland, the windmill needs your support in raising funds to get the repairs done and re-opened for the public as soon as possible. A GoFundMe link has been set up and it would be wonderful if you can all donate what you can - every euro counts. For more information you can email elphinwindmill1740@gmail.com. DAY CENTRE 

Elphin Day Centre provides a wonderful local service. If anyone wishes to avail of the services ring 0719635566 or 0876803675. Arts and crafts continue with Angela. Yoga continues every Monday and Tuesday.

 WINDMILL WHEELERS 

The Windmill Classic will take place on Sunday, June 8th from Elphin Community Centre, €30 for CI members, €20 non-members. Hot food served afterwards. The 100k starts at 9a.m. and the 50k starts 9.30 a.m.. Proceeds this year will go to the Elphin Windmill repair fund following damage caused by Storm Eowyn.

ADULT SET DANCING CLASSES 

Adult set dancing classes take place in the Bothar Rua on Tuesdays at 8.30 p.m., beginners welcome. Contact Michael Gunn for information on 086 3122897.

TOWER BAR SESSIONS 

Huge thanks to everyone who took part in the St. Patrick’s Day Irish trad session. The next singers night in The Tower Inn is on the last Sunday of the month at 8 p.m.. All singers and listeners will be made very welcome and all genre of singing will be catered for, so come along and enjoy a fantastic night of entertainment. The regular Tuesday sessions start at 8.30 p.m. and, again, everyone is welcome.

BINGO 

Bingo in Elphin Community Centre every Monday at 8.30 p.m.. Thank you to everyone who supports the weekly bingo.
