ROSCOMMON SPECIAL OLYMPICS

It has been a super year for everyone associated with Roscommon Special Olympics and later this year when we look back on the year, we can be so proud of all our athletes who show up, turn up and take part in all our activities. As we come back down to ground after a wonderful All Ireland games for our Club, and training ramps up for our annual duel with the wonderful team at Roscommon Garda Station comes the absolute huge news that our Club have qualified to take part in the Special Olympics European Swimming Open to be held in Malta from the 10th to the 14th of September next. Four of our athletes and two of our coaches have been chosen to represent Roscommon, Connacht and Ireland at these games. We are the only Club representing Ireland and to say we are proud is an absolute understatement, this is a huge achievement. There are 39 other countries taking part in these games. What an experience it is going to be. Congratulations to our 4 athletes Anne Marie Donnelly, Brian Og McGarvey, Shaun Mullen and Sorcha Hegarty, our super coach Marie Keane and the Head of our Delegation Bob McCormack. I cannot begin to truly express our excitement, anticipation and the general buzz around the Club that this selection has created. It is true testament to the exceptionally hard work our athletes’ volunteers and our brilliant swimming coach Marie have put in week in week out over the last number of years. Even though the delegation for these European games may be small, it highlights the amazing support, encouragement and camaraderie our athletes show each other. All our athletes are behind Anne Marie, Brian Og, Shaun and Sorcha as they do their very best in the pool in Qawra Malta. It displays the wonderful support that we have from parents, family members and carers who bring all our Club athletes to their sessions in whatever sport they take part in. We are a small but brilliant Club without doubt. Over the next while you will get to meet the athletes but for now congratulations one and all, a super achievement.
