Local Notes: Serious lack of childcare places in Boyle area, Leaving Cert graduation and AC news

The Boyle Community Childcare Needs Analysis will be launched at an event in the Boyle Family Resource Centre on Friday, June 13th at 10 a.m.. The event will highlight key findings and insights into the current childcare landscape in Boyle and the wider region. At the launch critical data and recommendations identifying gaps, challenges, and opportunities in local childcare provision will be presented. An open discussion will also take place on collaborative efforts that could support children, families, and the broader Boyle community.
A Mandala workshop will be held on June 6th in Boyle from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. This ancient form of creativity helps to improve mental health and is an enjoyable experience. The workshop will be facilitated by Misneach Croi. This is funded by Creative Ireland through Roscommon County Council. Please contact Teresa O’Brien on 086 029 1215. Boyle AC athletes were among the many who took part in the Chris O’Dowd Memorial Run held on Sunday at Lough Key Forest Park. Organised by North and West Roscommon GAA, the 5K and 10K races were held in aid of the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. In the 5k both Fidelma Mullaney and Nance Hayden both earned podium finishes, with strong runs also from Conor Hamel and Sinéad Keenehan.
Congratulations to Aisling Conry, who ran a strong 10k race to take victory in the women’s event. It was also a standout day for Sean Ballantyne, who delivered a great performance and set a new personal best over the 10k distance—a fantastic achievement on a challenging course. There were also strong runs from Noel Scally, Mark Reilly, Sheila Cunningham, Cian Duffy, and Ashley Kelly, rounding out a successful outing for the team. Well done everyone supporting a great cause.
The death occurred on May 23rd of Mrs Bridie Hickey (née Dwyer) Elphin Street, Boyle, Roscommon, F52Y640 Bridie Hickey (née Dwyer), Elphin Street, Boyle. Predeceased by her son Philip, she is deeply regretted by her husband, Bernard; daughters, Olive, Edel, Carol and Joan; sons, Brian and Kevin; her 16 grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Following Funeral Mass in St. Joseph’s, Church, Boyle on Monday burial took place in Assylinn Cemetery.
Last week Abbey Community College was awarded the Gaelbhratach for its efforts in promoting the Irish language throughout the school. The student committee worked tirelessly all year to organise fun, engaging events that brought Irish to life outside the classroom.

The Leaving Certificate Class of 2025 at Abbey Community College marked a memorable milestone on Thursday last as they graduated in a heartfelt ceremony held at St Joseph’s Church. The event celebrated the achievements, growth, and journey of the students as they prepare to take their next steps beyond school life. Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the school where students, families, and staff gathered to reflect on their time together. Awards were presented to recognise outstanding contributions and accomplishments. Anna McGrath was honoured as Student of the Year for 2025, while Emma Kelly received the prestigious Mercy Award. A sincere thank you goes to all staff who helped organise the day and supported the students throughout their years at the school. Wishing Class of 2025 every success in the future.
