Local Notes: Shannon Basin Radio Club, club night with a difference and careers fair

Patricia and Assumpta braved the elements last Friday to collective for the Irish Cancer Society on Daffodil Day for the 38th year.
Well done to the two wonderful volunteers, Patricia and Assumpta, who braved the biting cold and heavy rain last Friday to collect for Elphin’s Daffodil Day. Unfortunately their tent was blown away but it did not deter them from continuing with their volunteer work. This year was the 38th anniversary of Daffodil Day in Elphin. Well done.
Shannon Basin Radio Club (SBRC) came to Elphin Windmill last Saturday to present the windmill committee with a generous donation towards repairs to the Windmill following damage inflicted by Storm Eowyn. SBRC is 25 years old this year and the call signal is EI2EWM issued by the Department of Communication. The website is SBRC.ie. There is a huge interest in radio transmitting and SBRC regularly visits Elphin Windmill to send and receive signals. Storm Eowyn made all aware of the importance of being able to communicate and receive information and this is where clubs worldwide like SBRC are so important. Chairman Patrick O'Connor presented the cheque to Rosie Nee of the Windmill Committee and was accompanied on this visit by Anthony Dolan, Treasurer, Conor Nolan, Keith Nolan (PRO), and Fergus Miller. Sean Martin of the Tower Bar, Elphin was present along with Barry Beirne from the Windmill Committee.
Elphin Bridge Club results for the Christy Quinn Perpetual Shield held on March 20th: 1st, Kathleen and Declan Loftus; 2nd, Winnie Lyons and Therese O Daly; 3rd, Emily and Brendan Leonard; 4th, Eithne Cryan and Geraldine Greene.
The Community Arts and Drama Society commenced rehearsals last week in the community centre. The date has now been confirmed for the show and it will take place on May 17th in the Community Centre, time to be confirmed. It promises to be a great night with many groups in the community involved in the production.
Line dancing with Shannon takes place in An Bothar Rua every Wednesday at 8 p.m.. It’s great fun and everyone is welcome, it’s also a great workout.

Organisers of the fun run in aid of Downs Syndrome Roscommon held in Elphin are humbled and overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of everyone who contributed to the race day. Over €10,000 has been raised for Down Syndrome Ireland Roscommon, who provide wonderful support for its members.
Congrats to the Sixth Class girls from Abbeycartron NS who represented the school with pride recently in a camogie blitz in Creggs. This was the first time the school took part in a camogie competition and for most of the girls it was their first time playing a camogie match. This didn't deter them though as they put in three brilliant performances against three great, sporting teams from Tarmon NS, Ballintubber NS and Creggs NS, to qualify for the county quarter finals. Thanks to all in Creggs NS for a great day out despite the weather.
All roads led to Elphin Community Centre last Friday evening for the annual Scòr na bpàistì competition. Abbeycartron NS had two quiz teams, two set dancing groups, two solo singers, three ballad groups, an instrumental music group, a novelty act and also a recitation. It was a wonderful evening's entertainment. Well done to all the children who had been practicing hard over the last few weeks.
Elphin Day Centre will be having its Easter Mass and party with usual music raffle and refreshments on Wednesday, April 16th. Everyone welcome. Elphin Day Centre provide a wonderful local service. Yoga continues every Monday and Tuesday.
The Windmill Classic will take place on Sunday, June 8th from Elphin Community Centre, €30 for CI members, €20 non-members. Hot food served afterwards. Updates and information on Facebook and Instagram pages. The 100k starts at 9 a.m., 50k starts 9.30 a.m.. Proceeds this year will go to the Elphin Windmill repair fund following damage caused by Storm Eowyn.
The next singers’ night in The Tower Inn is on the last Sunday of the month at 8 p.m.. All singers and listeners will be made very welcome and all genre of singing will be catered for, so come along and enjoy a fantastic night of entertainment. The regular Tuesday sessions start at 8.30 p.m. and, again, everyone is welcome.
Bingo in Elphin Community Centre every Monday at 8.30 p.m.. Thank you to everyone who supports the weekly bingo.

Fr. Pat Lombard P.P. will speak on the life of Blessed Carlo Acutis in St. Michael's Church, Croghan on Wednesday, April 2nd at 7.30 p.m.. Mass will also be celebrated. Blessed Carlo Acutis is due to be canonised later this month.

Shannon Gaels GAA Club will hold an Easter Camp from April 14th to 16th in Pairc na nGael (Bullfield), Boyle Road, Carrick-on-Shannon. Camp hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Activities include games, arts and crafts, GAA skills and plenty of fun. Tickets may be purchased from club app.
Confirmation for children from Croghan parish will take place in Cootehall Church on Tuesday, April 8th at 11 a.m..
The Old Creamery Café, Croghan is open on Thursday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.; Saturday 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. All welcome to visit and sample coffees, teas, homebaked brown bread, cakes, apple tarts, scones, soup, sandwiches, etc..
Recent winner of the Shannon Gaels GAA Club’s 50/50 draw was Martin O'Dowd who won €550. Thanks to all who support the draw, it is much appreciated.

Bingo takes place in the Patrician Hall, Cortober on Sundays at 8 p.m.. All welcome.
Over 30 exhibitor stands covering many sectors and employers from across Roscommon and the hinterland, will take part in a Careers Fair at Kilbride Community Centre on this Wednesday, April 2nd. There will also be training, volunteering and further education supports on offer.
