Local Notes: Temperatures test athletes, international jazz day and afternoon tea

PRESENTATION ON CHILD SAFETY ONLINE 

The Community Policing Unit of An Garda Síochána in Boyle are partnering with Hotline.ie to present a parents information evening on May 7th in St. Joseph's Hall, Boyle, at 7 p.m.. Child safety online is an important issue especially for parents and this evening will be ideal for parents of primary school children of all ages. Hotline.ie is the national reporting platform for harmful or illegal content online. It is a member of the Irish Safer Internet Centre along with Webwise, ISPCC and the National Parents Council. There will be presentations followed by a question-and-answer session. This will provide a valuable opportunity for parents to hear from one of the foremost experts in online child safety in Ireland along with supporting presentations.

INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY TO BE CELEBRATED IN BOYLE 

As part of the worldwide celebration of International Jazz Day, created by the United Nations in 2011, an event, organised by Boyle Film Club, will be held at the Church of Ireland, Green Street, Boyle on April 30th, commencing at 7.30 p.m.. Every year thousands of events are celebrated all over the world and this year one will be held in Boyle. The event will be a live 45 minute concert with Christine Tobin and band followed by screening of the film "Jimmy's Hall" (2014) (age rate15) by director Ken Loach. There will be a small interval before film and a Q&A with musicians as two of them were part of the film. Tickets €15, cash, at the door. To book-email- boylefilmclub@gmail.com. This event is kindly supported by the Roscommon County Council Creative Ireland Programme. Musicians line up is: Christine Tobin, vocals; Ciaran Wilde, saxophone; Cathal Roche, clarinet; Phil Robson, guitar; Damien Evans, double bass; Dominic Mullan, drums.

AFTERNOON TEA EVENT AT TAWNYTASKIN 

An afternoon tea event will take place on Easter Monday, April 21st at Tawnytaskin Community Centre, Boyle, from 12 noon until 5.30 p.m. The cost is €10. BOYLE AC NEWS 

The second race of the Roscommon Harriers 5k Series took place on Friday evening under sunny skies and high temperatures that tested runners. Despite the challenging conditions, the Boyle AC team delivered a string of impressive performances and notable improvements from the previous week.

Damien Coman led the charge crossing the finish line in an impressive 19:03. Philip James shaved 36 seconds off his previous time to finish in 21:36. Claire Flanagan continued her steady progress, improving by 22 seconds, while Vicky Nolan made the most significant gain of the evening, cutting a remarkable 64 seconds off last week's time.

Great performances were also recorded by Cian Duffy, Caroline O’Grady, and Fidelma Mullaney, contributing to a very strong team effort on the night.

In Saturday’s Ballyshannon 5k, Melissa Doohan continued her impressive return to form, clocking a fantastic time of 20:59. This marked a new postpartum personal best—improving by 25 seconds from the 5k time she achieved in Mullingar just a few weeks ago—and brought her even closer to her all time personal record.

RAMBLING HOUSE 

A Rambling House will be held on Sunday, May 11th at 3 p.m. in Tawnytaskin Community Centre, Boyle, with Gene Sheerin, storyteller. Come along and join in an afternoon of music, song, dance and storytelling, all local talent with one or two surprises. There will be refreshments served and a raffle on the day. Tickets €10. Proceeds in aid of Mayo/Roscommon Hospice.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY 

Divine Mercy Sunday devotions will be held in St. Joseph’s Church, Boyle, on Sunday, April 27th starting with Eucharistic Adoration and confessions from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Mass at 3 p.m. Veneration of Divine Mercy picture after Mass. All are welcome.

LATE MR TOMMY GEELAN 

The death occurred on April 12th at the age of 81 of Mr Tommy Geelan, Cartron, Grange, Moate, and formerly of Marian Road, Boyle. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Susan and Paddy, his older brother P.J., his first wife Sadie and his son Enda, his second wife Frances. Deeply mourned by his daughters, Donna and Sharon; his twin brother, Francie; sisters-in-law, Maureen and Ann; nephews and nieces, sons-in-law, grandchildren, relatives and a large circle of friends. Tommy’s remains will be reposing in the Carmelite Church, Moate from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on April 16th followed by Funeral Mass. Burial to take place in Assylinn Cemetery, Boyle at approximately 3 p.m.

GOLF NEWS 

The winner of the men’s 18 Hole Stableford played on April 6th/7th was the very much “in form” Tim Hester with 44 points, a full five points clear of second placed Jonathan Egan. Michael Simon won the gross and Paddy McLoughlin came third with 37 points.

The first mid-week men’s competition of the year winner was Martin Sweeney with 20 points. Vincent Egan beat son Lorcan Egan to second place on countback. This weekend’s competition will be a team event. Players are reminded that online booking is compulsory and failing to do so may result in disqualification. The men’s Thursday competition continues as a 9 hole for the next few weeks. The “Voucher” competition takes place for the men on the weekend after the Easter Bank Holiday. First prize is, as ever, the “free sub”, but only those whose membership is paid in full or in good standing are eligible to win first prize, so get those memberships paid this week or next week.
