Local Notes: Trien Players, recent deaths and school football

SUPPORT URGED FOR DAFFODIL DAY 

Daffodil Day is on Friday, March 20th. Donations can be made in Cahill’s SuperValu and on The Square Castlerea. Please support this wonderful cause. Fresh daffodils can be donated in D Gaff Barrack Street on Thursday, March 19th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m..

AGM OF ICA GUILD HELD 

Following another very successful year the Castlerea guild of the ICA held its AGM on Monday, March 2nd. The following officers were elected: President, Adrianne Murphy; Secretary, Siobhan Earley; Treasurer, Eileen Mulvihill; committee members, Sheila O’Flanagan, Frances Carty, Dympna Lambert, Kathleen Freyne, Mary Hawthorne, and Mamie Creaton. The guild members would like to express their gratitude to Bernadette Crawley and Marie Stenson for their commitment, dedication and hard work over the past number of years on committee. The guild meets on the second Monday of each month in D’Gaff. Next meeting is on Monday, April 13th at 8 p.m.. New members welcome.

THANKS FROM TRIEN PLAYERS 

The Trien Players would like to thank the community, near and far, for their support and attendance at the latest production of Jimmy Keary’s play, ‘For Love and Money’. The group truly appreciate everyone who came along and made the show such a success. “Thank you all for being such a wonderful audience,” said the group.

GOLF LOTTO 

The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for March 11th was14. Winners of this week’s lotto were Patrick O’Connor, Barry Egan, Jamie Flannery, Paraic Gorham, and Matthew Masterson. Each receive €100.

LATE MR FRANCIS MULVIHILL

 The death occurred peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, March 7th of Mr Francis (Frankie) Mulvihill (formerly of RTÉ), Tarmon Manor, Castlerea, and Drumderrig Nursing Home, Boyle. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Evelyn, and brother, Aidan. Deceased who was a member of a highly respected Castlerea and Ballindrimley family was a very kind, gentle and jolly person. He enjoyed company and his pint of Guinness or beer and he loved to have a conversation with people. He was a hard worker and worked in the UK before returning to Ireland where he worked for many years with RTÉ. He achieved a lot during his life and during his time with RTÉ. He made many friends and was highly thought of by his work colleagues and employers who always praised him for how he looked after them and how he was always in good humour and was dedicated to his job. He was also a man of great faith. He will be sadly missed by his loving family, brothers, Charlie and Noel; sisters, Mary, Angela (Holohan), Bernie (O’Callaghan), and Carmel (O’Connor); brothers-in-law, Jim and Tony; sisters-in-law, Fiona and Eileen; nephews, nieces, relatives, friends, and neighbours. His remains were removed from Gaynor’s Funeral Home on Tuesday evening to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr. Joe McManus burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. The ceremony was enhanced by the singing and music of Castlerea Church Choir. Before the final blessing, the Communion reflection ‘He is gone’ was read by Noel Mulvihill, brother of the deceased. Commandant Joe Glennon A.D.C. represented Tanaiste Simon Harris at the funeral. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

SCHOOL FOOTBALL 

Castlerea Community School’s First Year team defeated Drumshanbo Vocational School in the first round of the Connacht Colleges Division (D) Championship at Drumshanbo on Tuesday, March 10th. Castlerea played with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half and led at half time by 2-13 to 0-1. The second half was even enough but Castlerea were the better balanced team all through.

CLOONBONNIFFE DRAMA 

All roads lead to Trinity Arts Centre on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, March 26th/27th and 29th for the Cloonbonniffe Drama Group’s staging of the comedy Big Splash, Small Fish by Jim Keane. Please note the show starts each night at 8 p.m.. The cast have been rehearsing hard under their director Bernie Egan over the past few months. This is their first show since Covid. Your support would be very much appreciated.

BALLYMOE/BALLINTUBBER

BALLYMOE FC UNDERAGE REGISTRATION 

Ballymoe FC is now accepting registrations for the 2026 underage season for boys and girls U-7, U-9, U-11, U-12, U-14 and boys U-16 and U-18. Fees are €70 per child from U-9 to U-18, €40 for U-7, max fee per family, €150. To register contact Kevin at (087) 968 6406. All players must be registered before training and matches begin. New players welcome at all age groups.

INDOOR SOCCER 

Indoor soccer is now taking place in the Fr. Flanagan Memorial Centre, Ballymoe every Sunday – U-7 and U-9, 5 p.m. - 6.30 p.m., U-11, 6.30 - 7.30 p.m.. You can also register at this training for Ballymoe FC.
