Local Notes: Visitor Centre talks, book launch and school recycling

Many thanks to everyone who supported the Fairymount Church fundraiser on Easter Sunday night in Boland’s Bar. Thank you to everyone who attended on the night, to those who sent contributions but couldn’t attend, to those who donated prizes for the draw and to Pat and Alicia for the use of their premises and generous donation. The sum of €1,630 was raised on the night, which will be added to the fund to replace the church ceiling.
Chair yoga and relaxation classes will start back again the Parochial Hall, Frenchpark on this Friday, May 2nd from 11 a.m. to 12noon. Children’s yoga and mindfulness classes will also continue on Fridays from 3.30 p.m. to 4.15 p.m.. Contact Suzie on 083-8234259 for further information.
Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, April 26th last. There was no winner of the jackpot. The numbers drawn were 3, 11, 29 and 32. Cash prize winners (€20 each) were Caroline/Seamus Beirne, Brian Casserly Jnr., Deirdre Corcoran, E. Daire and Marcus McDermott. The next draw (jackpot €9,100) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on Saturday, May 3rd. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.
The peaceful death occurred of Mr Anthony Devine, Clooneigh, Elphin on Tuesday, April 15th last at Roscommon University Hospital. In his 93rd year, Anthony was predeceased by his son, Tony in 2008, brothers John & Michael and his parents James & Brigid. He will be sadly missed by his sorrowing wife, Dorothy; family, Breege (Frenchpark) and partner, Brian; John and partner Amanda; Martin and his wife Leanne; David and his partner Ciara; grandchildren, brother Con, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends. His remains were removed to the Church of S.S. Eithne & Fidelma, Tulsk on Good Friday for Funeral Liturgy followed by burial afterwards in Tulsk Cemetery.

First prize of a red Limousin heifer was won by Kieran Donoghue, Tulsk with the second prize of a €500 Center Parcs voucher going to Oliver Loughlin, Dromahair. Third prize, a €300 voucher for agricultural work by Mac Mull Plant Hire was won by Charlie Mc Guinness, of Drumlion while Sandra Murphy, Dublin was the winner of a €250 cash prize. Fifth prize, one night B&B at Lough Rynn or Kilronan Castle was won by Shane Mc Hugh of Carrigallen while sixth prize of a €200 Dunnes voucher went to Anita Parsons of Tulsk. The seventh prize of afternoon tea in the Galway Bay Hotel was won by John De Nash, Flaska. Henry Gillespie of Athlone won a €100 Smyth’s voucher and children’s Scania jacket. The ninth prize of a drinks hamper was won by Robert Mulrennan, Tulsk while a €50 Apple Green voucher went to Derek Madden, Camogue. The 11th prize was won by Maura Finneran, Dysart who received a €50 Cut n’ Edge Hair Salon voucher while the final prize of a €25 Rogue & Co voucher and wine was won by Damien Shaughnessy, Strokestown. Local residents are warmly invited to the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre on Saturday, May 3rd (the May Bank Holiday Weekend), from 10.45 a.m. for the centre’s two lecture seminar, to mark the celebration of Bealtaine. The first lecture of the morning will be given by Dr Marian McGarry who will speak on the theme of Old Bealtaine Customs of Ireland. She will be looking at the rites and rituals practiced on May 1st, to mark the celebration of Bealtaine and bring good luck to the household. Dr McGarry is an art historian, author, independent researcher and lecturer at the Atlantic Technological University. She is the author of a number of publications, among them Irish Customs and Rituals: How Our Ancestors Celebrated Life and the Seasons, The Irish Cottage: History, Culture and Design and An Illustrated Dictionary of Furniture & Interiors. The second speaker is Rathcroghan Visitor Centre’s Mike McCarthy, who will present his research on the place of the Cailleach in the Irish imagination. Titled 'Cailleach Feasa nó Cailleach an Uafáis? (A Wise Woman or a Hag of Horror?)'. This talk will explore aspects of the concept of the Cailleach in language, literature and folklore and discuss the place she still holds in modern day awareness. Mike originally qualified and worked in the area of community pharmacy before a love of history, folklore and mythology brought him to Cruachan Aí / Rathcroghan, the Royal Site of Connacht in County Roscommon, where he works as a tour guide, research assistant and deputy manager of the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre. He has co-authored numerous publications pertaining to Rathcroghan, including ‘Slí Seandálaíochta Ráth Cruachan’ - the Rathcroghan Archaeological trail and ‘Rathcroghan - The Guidebook’, published in 2018, with a second edition in 2023. It’s expected there will be considerable volumes of traffic passing through Tulsk village both on Friday evening and again on Monday evening. It’s hoped all visitors and those who stop off in the parish to shorten their journeys have a most enjoyable and pleasant experience and return to the community in the not too distant future.
Well done to Tulsk’s junior footballers who enjoyed an empathic victory over Kilmore in their Division 5 fixture at the weekend. The match finished Tulsk 2-15 Kilmore 0-9.
The May meeting of the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society (CRHAS) will take place in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Tulsk on Tuesday, May 6th at 8 p.m.. The business of the meeting will be followed, as usual, by the Society’s regular monthly lecture. New members are warmly invited to attend.

Copies of a new book ‘Care of Earthen Monuments – A Farming Rathcroghan Model’ by Kate Robb of John Cronin and Associates is now available in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre in Tulsk. There was a large attendance at the book launch which was very well received by all those present.
Clooneyquinn National School places a large orange plastic bottle recycling bin at the gate between the school and Killina Church on Saturday evenings. The school welcomes all donations to its recycling funding initiative from anyone attending Mass who may like to use the facility – thank you.
