Congratulations to the St. Michael’s county winning ballad group of Chloe McGuinness, Ronan & Aoife Guckian, Sorcha Gilboy, and Niamh Reynolds who travelled to Kilmurray to compete for the club in Scór. Best of luck to the ballad group in the Connacht finals in Tubbercurry on Saturday. Huge congratulations to all involved in the Scór teams. Maire Ní Donnacha proudly represented St. Michael’s in recitation, while Ronan & Aoife Guckian and Niamh Reynolds represented the club in the instrumental music group and were unlucky not to progress further. Sorcha Gilboy also represented the club brilliantly in solo singing. Congratulations also to neighbours St. Ronan’s who won in instrumental music. A special mention also to Annmarie Harte for all her work and dedication to Scór, it is very much appreciated. Well done to everyone involved especially Scór coordinator Geraldine McMorrow.
The death occurred of Mrs Christina Miley, Lisdaulan, Rahara, peacefully, on February 27th surrounded by her husband Johnny, daughters and extended family in the tender care of the staff of Roscommon Hospice. She was formerly Christina Carthy of Leitrim Village, Leitrim. She was one of a family of two girls and one boy born to her late parents, William and Margaret Carthy and raised in Carty’s Pub business in Leitrim village along side her sister Marguerite and brother David. She was born in 1955 and received her primary and second level in Leitrim. Afterwards she was appointed to the Civil Service in Dublin. During those years she met her future husband Johnny Miley from Ballyglass, Rahara and later married in 1981 in St. Joseph’s Church, Leitrim village, and then settled on the Miley Family Farm in Lisdaulan, Rahara and were blessed with three beautiful daughters. Christina transferred to the Roscommon offices and her working career with the Civil Service for 42 years and made many friends and was noted for her work. She was gentle and friendly by nature, and her home was always welcoming. Central to Christina’s life was her strong faith and her devotion to prayer, Mass, the Sacraments. She also welcomed the visits from Fr. Michael and Fr. Ray. Christina will be forever missed by her devoted husband, Johnny; daughters, Niamh (Castlecoote), Eimear (Rahara) and Dervla (Tipperary); sons-in-law, David Mullin and Martin Ryan; her cherished grandchildren, Óisin, Ruairí and Donnacha. She is also mourned by her sister, Marguerite (Dublin); brother, David (Leitrim Village); extended family and friends and her work colleagues. Predeceased by her parents, William and Margaret Carthy, also her mother and father-in-law Ned and Pauline Miley. Her family express gratitude to her carers, the staff of St. Theresa’s Ward Roscommon Hospital and Roscommon Hospice for their compassionate care. Christina reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home Roscommon, with removal from her home to St. Patrick’s Church for her funeral Mass with burial afterward in Gaily Cemetery. Her funeral mass was celebrated by her good friend Fr. Michael Donnelly, Rahara, assisted by Deacon Willie Gacquin.

Though there is a natural pride and joy throughout the whole of Ireland at Jessie Buckley’s achievement in winning an Oscar in Hollywood on Sunday night, there is a special sense of pride in Williamstown, the native place of Jessie’s paternal great grandfather, Jack Comer. She becomes the first Irish woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in a leading role, for her part in the acclaimed film “Hamnet”. Warmest Congratulations from all in Williamstown, Jessie.
The Heritage Society extends sympathy to the family of the late Johnny Feeney. He was a regular part of so much of the group’s activities for several years and all will miss him very much. Sympathy to his wife, Mary and the Feeney family. Sympathy also to Bridie and the Mitchell family, Leatra on the death of Bridie’s husband, Maurice. RIP Johnny and Maurice.
Beidh an chéad chruinniú eile den Chiorcal Cainte áitiúil ar siúl i gcaifé SNJ ar an Domhnach seo, 22ú Márta. Tá súil againn go mbeidh gach duine arais arís agus, ar ndóigh, beidh fáilte mór roimh dhaoine eile gur mhaith leo teacht go dtí an cruinniú freisin.
There was much sadness throughout the community when news spread of the death of Maurice Mitchell, Leatra at a comparatively young age. He was well known throughout the locality as an industrious and very progressive dairy farmer, whose approach and methods in his chosen life career which he loved, were always up with, if not even slightly ahead of the times. Working with diggers, including in the construction field, was something which came very easily to him, and he worked in this area for some years, both in England and in the Dublin area, before he, Bridie and the family returned to Leatra. The numerous awards won by Maurice for his animals over the years show the high standards for which he always strived. Because of his great ability with his hands, he was also able to invent and manufacture various tools which he could use in a practical way. Maurice was, in many ways, ahead of his contemporaries, insofar as he researched everything he had an interest in, whether it be breeds of cows, modern farm equipment or, in complete contrast, breadmaking, at which he also became an expert. His family meant so much to Maurice and the love he shared with Bridie was passed on seamlessly, first of all, to his own children and then to his grandchildren, all of whom loved the numerous, endless play sessions which he had with them, not to mention his freshly baked, delicious bread. The meaningful homily from Fr. Tommie Commins and the beautiful eulogy by Maurice’s daughter Vanessa conveyed very clearly the many exemplary characteristics of Maurice. Maurice had numerous interests including current affairs, history, music, cowboy films and travel. Among the places he and Bridie visited was Australia, where the strong links they forged with their relations over there have continued and even strengthened into the next generation.
Sincere sympathy to Maurice’s wife, Bridie, sons and daughters Allan, Declan, Yvonne and Vanessa, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, sisters Alice and Mary, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. RIP Maurice.
