Una Finnegan, the long-serving and extremely efficient receptionist at Williamstown Health Centre, retired from her position on Friday last, May 31st. To mark the occasion, a special party was organised by her family, friends and the community in general in the Parish Hall. It was a wonderful occasion, with a huge crowd in attendance and generous helpings of very appetising food available to all. Local G.P. Dr Gergely Kasa, who has served all the patients who attend the local Health Centre exceptionally well for the past number of years, also retired on the same day, as, for family reasons, he is taking up a new post in Cork. He, like Una, was included in the widespread sentiments of gratitude for a job well done, and also good wishes for the future.
The host for the occasion was Leo Finnegan, a family friend of Unas and the Finnegans, and his message of gratitude to Una, not just for her outstanding professional career, but also for her massive contribution, along with her husband Jim, to the Williamstown community for decades, was echoed by the other speakers, Cllr Declan Geraghty, Michael Fitzmaurice, T.D., and former councillor Tiernan Walsh. All of them wished Una a happy, healthy retirement.
Equally warm remarks were made by the four speakers above to Dr. Kasa, thanking him for his outstanding work as a G.P. and wishing him every success in the future.
In reply, Dr. Kasa warmly thanked the community for their kindness to him over the years, and paid a special tribute to Una for her superb work in the Health Centre over the years.
Una’s son, Robert, on behalf of the family, paid a lovely tribute to her, saying how she has been an exceptional, loving mother to all the members of the family, and how, among so many other ways in which, with Jim, she had supported them, was ensuring that all of them got a good education, as a result of which, they are all in happy, secure employment at present.
Before the party concluded, the special cake, marking this important occasion, was cut and shared out among all present.
It was a lovely, well-deserved occasion and a fitting send-off to two special people. Again, warmest thanks to Una for her outstanding service and every good wish for a happy, healthy retirement. Equally warm thanks to Dr. Kasa for his great contribution as a G.P. and every good wish for the next stage of his career.

Following the recent acceptance of the invitation from Galway County Council to Williamstown to represent Galway in the Pride of Place 2024 Competition, the campaign is now well and truly under way. The next meeting, to which all are welcome, is scheduled for this evening, Tuesday, June 4th at 9 p.m. in the Parish Hall.
Maintaining a long-standing tradition, the annual Corpus Christi Procession was held after 10.30 a.m. Mass in Williamstown on Sunday. Weather conditions were ideal for the event, and the town looked very well for the occasion. In keeping with a time-honoured practice, the householders along the route of the procession had put attractive altars in place outside their premises. All areas of the town were visited, and following Benediction on the square, the procession continued back to the church. Fr. Anthaiah then thanked all who had participated in such large numbers in the Procession, and also those who had helped out in various ways.
Well done to the Glinsk ladies junior team who participated at the Connacht 7s in Bekan. Despite being in a tough group, the girls performed heroically and more than held their own. Glinsk played Kilconly in the first game and while the girls remained competitive for the most part, the physical strength and maturity of Kilconly proved too much in the end. Glinsk played much better in the next game against St. Bridget’s ( Mayo ) and the final score of 4.11 to 0.10 did not do justice to their efforts. Glinsk really clicked into gear against St.Dominick’s and ran out winners on a 7-12 to 2-12 scoreline. Glinsk then played Annaghadown and needed a win to have any chance of progressing. The girls were simply outstanding in this game and were unlucky to lose by 3 points – 4-8 to 3-8. Glinsk panel: Shauna Keane (Captain), Nicole Griffin, Aoife Keane, Aisling Keane, Eimear Keane, Caoimhe Keane, Emma Griffin, Tegan Neary, Alanna Scappaticci, Shauna McGovern, Erin Doherty, Nicola Mulligan.

Congratulations to the five Keane sisters, Shauna, Aoife, Aisling, Eimear and Caoimhe who all played in the Connacht 7s. It was the first time in the history of the club that five members of the one family played competitive football together for the club. Congrats also to the proud parents Joe and Mary.
Good luck and best wishes to all Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert students due to embark on the state exams this Wednesday..

Players Abroad: Well done to Alisha Lenehan, Ryan Galvin, Gerry Galvin, and Ryan Donoghue who represented Padraig Pearses Melbourne Club in League Finals at the weekend. Alisha's team contested a Senior League Final and the lads' team contested an Intermediate League Final. Unfortunately, neither team were successful this time around.
