FRENCHPARK NS TAKING PART IN SCHOOLS’ BATTERY RECYCLING COMPETITION

The children from St. Patrick's NS, Frenchpark are taking part in the WEEE Ireland Schools’ Battery Recycling Competition. The Green School's Committee visited businesses in the village to leave in blue battery boxes so that the community can drop in batteries to help them with their challenge. They visited Mitchell's Shop and the Post Office, Farrell's Coffee Shop, Oliver's Butchers, Sheila's Hair Salon, Applegreen, The Cornerstone and the church. Batteries can also be dropped into the school. Thank you to everyone who has donated used batteries so far.

DAFFODIL DAY 

Daffodil Day is the Irish Cancer Society's biggest fundraiser and it is taking place this year on this Friday, March 20th. Donations of fresh daffodils can be handed in to Kitty Harrington’s house on the Boyle Road from this Wednesday, March 18th onwards. Daffodils will be for sale at the usual shops and outlets in Frenchpark and surrounding areas on Daffodil Day. Many thanks for your support in the past and looking forward to your continued support.

LATE MRS MARIE RYAN 

The death occurred peacefully of Mrs Marie Ryan, Tibohine and formerly of Southpark, Castlerea on Monday, March 9th last at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar. In her 80th year, the late Mrs Ryan (née Finan) was pre-deceased by her parents Martin and Mary, brothers Sean and Martin and her sister Bernadette. She will be sadly missed and remembered with love by her husband, Patsy; sons, Alan (Yelena), Gary (Marié), Enda (Susan) and Christopher (Grace); sisters, Anne Moylan and Geraldine Whybrow; grandchildren, Karina, Liam, Roy and Zoe; brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. Mass of the Resurrection, celebrated by Fr. Micheál Donnelly in St. Beithin’s Church, Tibohine on Thursday, March 12th last was followed by interment in Tibohine New Cemetery.

LATE MISS BERNI SMITH 

The peaceful death took place of Miss Bernadette (Berni) Smith, Dublin and formerly of Ballaghaderreen and Fairymount on Sunday, March 1st last at the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin. Berni (59) is deeply regretted by her heartbroken family, her father, Joe, mother Pauline; sister, Finnola; brothers, Cormac, Finbar, Sean and Pearse; uncles, aunts, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and her many friends. Her remains were removed to The Church of the Sacred Heart, Fairymount on Saturday, March 7th last. Following Requiem Mass, the funeral proceeded to Fairymount New Cemetery.

Pray for the repose of the souls of Mr Michael Beirne, Harrow, England and late of Ballinagare (brother of Austin and Tom Beirne); Mrs Nora Finan, Carrowkeel, Castlerea and formerly of Creggs; Mrs Helena Hearne, Naas; Mr John Burke, Knockvicar, Boyle and Mr Kenny Morris, Blackpool, Cork. May they rest in peace.

Masses will be held in Frenchpark at 10 a.m., Tibohine at 7 p.m. and Ballinagare at 8 p.m. on St. Patricks’ Day, in Frenchpark at 7 p.m. on Thursday (19th), Ballinagare at 7 p.m. on Friday (20th), Tibohine at 6.30 p.m. and Ballinagare at 8 p.m. on Saturday (21st) and in Frenchpark at 10 a.m. and Fairymount at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday (22nd).

WEB DEVELOPMENT COURSE 

A web development course for beginners commences on Tuesday, April 14th next at 7 p.m. at The Cornerstone in Frenchpark. The course is free. Places are limited and anticipated to fill up fast. LOTTO 

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, March 14th last. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 10, 22, 24 and 32. The next draw (jackpot €7,100) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on this Saturday, March 21st. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.

25 CARD GAME 

Tibohine Community Centre hosts a 25 card night on Thursdays from 8.30 p.m. to 10 p.m., €2 per person to keep the lights on. All welcome.

On Tuesday, February 24th St. Ronan's NS, Cloonloo, held its Global Citizenship Marine Environment Day of Action. The children and staff wore an item of green for the day. The children learned about the Picker Pal Programme and created Marine themed Green School Codes. The children and staff went on a Spring Clean around the school to collect rubbish. The senior room also had a visit from Brian Parle as part of the Marine Explores Education Programme.

Roscommon Holy Wells exhibition continues in Rathcroghan Visitor Centre. The companion book by author Tamlyn McHugh is still available in the centre’s bookshop.

HISTORY SOCIETY QUIZ 

 Tulsk History Society’s annual table quiz takes place on this Saturday, March 21st, in O’Connor’s Bar, Tulsk. Lots of spot prizes and fun on offer.

TRAINING PITCH OPENING 

It promises to be a weekend to remember for Tulsk GAA club on the June/Whit Bank Holiday with the club officially opening the new training pitch and related facilities. To mark the occasion, a series of events will take place that weekend.

RESIDENTS GROUP AGM 

The AGM of the Chestnut Grove Residents Association will take place on Tuesday, March 31st at 8 p.m. in the Macra Hall, Tulsk. All residents are warmly invited to attend. Contributions for the annual programme of grass cutting are now invited and can be paid in advance to committee members or on the night of the meeting. The contribution will remain unchanged from last year.

FUNDRAISING CONCERT 

A special fundraising concert will take place on Sunday, March 29th in Tulsk Macra Hall in support of Tulsk National School. Doors open at 12.30 p.m. with the concert beginning at 1 p.m.. Donations are voluntary at the door. The event will feature musical performances by local children and young people attending the Blackstick Music School and Tulsk National School. A tuck shop will be available on the day. Members of the local community are warmly invited to attend.

CHURCH GATE COLLECTION 

The Conradh na Gaeilge annual church gate collection will take place at local mass later today (St. Patrick’s Day). The support of the local community would be greatly appreciated.

RECENT DEATHS 

Prayers were recited at weekend masses for the late Marie Ryan, Tiobhine, a sister of Anne Moylan, Tulsk and for the late Áine Betagh, Crossmolina, daughter-in-law of Richard and Jean Betagh, Corlis. The sympathies of the entire community are extended to the families and friends of the deceased at this sad time.

COMMUNITY GAMES 

Entries are now being taken for local competitors to compete in a wide range of events, representing Tulsk Community Games this year. Entries are now being sought for a wide variety of field events for this year, ahead of a series of county events taking place on Thursday, March 26th from 6 p.m. at Castlerea Community School. Similarly, expressions of interest are now being taken for swimming events for this year, namely backstroke, freestyle and butterfly events in a range of various age categories. CONGRATULATIONS 

Congratulations to Sean Mannion from Milltown on being deputy grand marshal of Newark St. Patrick's Day Parade. He attended with fellow Castlerea Brass and Reed Band members, Cllr Liam Callaghan, Cathaoirleach Roscommon County Council and members of his family.

New signs have been installed on the three approach roads into Castleplunkett village featuring a stunning photograph of the turlough at sunset captured by Breda Cahill Durr. Beautiful work Breda, congratulations.

SCOR TRATH NA GCEIST 

Well done to Tulsk GAA’s quiz team who reached the final stage of the Scor Sinsir question rime competition, losing out narrowly to Elphin. Well done to team members Mary Kelly, Joe O'Rourke, Michael Jones and Kieran Moylan on their mighty effort.
