The death took place recently at his home of Mr Peter (Pete) Shiel of Carniska, Strokestown, husband of the late Mrs Eileen Shiel (nee Toolan). A native of Bunnamuca, Strokestown, he was the last surviving member of the family of the late Mr John Shiel and of the late Mrs Mai Shiel (nee Gilleran). He was a highly respected member of the farming community and renowned for his industry and hard work. Always good humoured and affable, he also took time to socialise with his late wife. He was an accomplished card player. A devout Catholic, he was noted for his neighbourly deeds. News of his passing, in his 95th year, was heard of with deep regret among his relatives, neighbours and wide circle of friends. He was predeceased by his son, Brendan, and infant daughter, Anne.. The Funeral Mass was con-celebrated at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Strokestown, by Fr. Vincent Atueyi, Fr. Eamonn O'Connor, PP, and Canon Ciaran Whitne (Strokestown) and the interment followed in Strokestown Cemetery. He is survived by his children, Seamus, Mary, Coman, Margaret, Martina, Peadar, Eibhlin, Ronan and Ciaran; 18 grandchildren, Katie, Sinead, Maeve, Siobhan, Brian, Niamh, Aoife, Kevin, Aidan, Fiona, Amy, Cathal, Mai, Ciara, Caitlin, Grace, Sam and Ellen Rose; four great-grandchildren, Donagh, Roise, Tessa and Lily; sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
Congratulations to the St. Mary’s U-10 girls who travelled to Croke Park over the weekend to represent Tulsk in a national football blitz. A huge well done as well to Alexis Clarke, who refereed on the day, which was a fantastic achievement. It was a wonderful experience for all the girls and a wonderful day out for everyone involved. The team did the parish proud and the future is certainly looking bright with these little stars shining so brilliantly.
The sympathies of local residents are extended to the family and friends of the late Julia McDermott, late of Golf Links Road, Roscommon Town and formerly of Cloonartbeg, Tulsk, who has passed away peacefully in her 97th year, in the tender care of all the staff at Oakwood Nursing Home, Roscommon and previously in her own home with her wonderful team of carers. The deceased was a sister of the late Peter and Nancy McDermott who lived on the Strokestown Road in Tulsk where they were popular and highly regarded individuals. The late Julia McDermott was immensely proud of her Tulsk roots and was a popular and personable individual in her local community. Predeceased by her parents, William and Annie, brother Peter, sisters Mary (Connaughton), Lena and Nancy and her beloved nephew Billy. Julia is survived by her nephews Michael and Eddie, nieces-in-law Anne, Paula and Anne and their families, relatives, friends and her many good neighbours. The deceased reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home, Roscommon before removal to the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon. Mass of the Resurrection took place yesterday (Monday) with burial afterwards in St Coman’s Cemetery.
The sympathies of the local community are extended to the family and friends of the late P.J. Owens, late of Lisnamult, Roscommon Town and formerly of Ogulla, Tulsk. The deceased passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe. The late P.J. was a most popular and unassuming gentleman who was known to many in the local community as well as being a member of a highly esteemed family. Predeceased by his beloved daughter Sharon Scanlon and her mother Winnie (née Cooke), his brother Gerry, and by his parents Patrick and Elizabeth. The deceased is survived by his son, Gavin; daughters Gillian, Ashling Carr and Gemma McHugh; his sons-in-law, Anthony, David and William; grandchildren, Dean, Shannon, Megan, Alanna, Thomas, Jamie, Leah and Jake; great-grandson, Michael; brother, Frank; sisters, Trudy, Kay, Jacinta and Pauline; nephews, nieces, extended family, neighbours, and friends. The deceased reposed at Smyth’s Funeral Home, Roscommon with Mass of the Resurrection in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon yesterday (Monday) and burial afterwards in St Coman’s Cemetery.

The next meeting of the County Roscommon Historical and Archaeological Society will take place on Tuesday, May 12th in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre from 8 p.m.. All members are invited to attend the meeting – new members are welcome. Next month’s lecture will be given by genealogist, Eilish Feeley on the recently published 1926 census. Last week’s lecture was given by a good friend of the society, Dr. Kieran O’Conor of the University of Galway Archaeology Department, on the history of Roscommon Abbey. Membership fees for the society are €25 for individual membership and €30 for family membership. For those attending once off lectures, there is a nominal fee of €5 per lecture. However, the annual membership entitles admittance to all the Society’s eight annual lectures, representing a considerable saving.
Preparations are well underway in Tulsk for a milestone weekend of celebrations to mark the official opening of the new playing facility and walkway. ‘The Tulsk Hooley’ will take place from Friday, May 29th to Monday June 1st (the June Bank Holiday Weekend) which promises to be a weekend to remember. Underage blitzes, legends matches, team reunions, official opening ceremony and a grand finale are just some of the highlights planned. Evening entertainment will be hosted in a marquee in the village. Members of Tulsk GAA are inviting friends and supporters near and far to join in the celebrations and reconnect with former clubmates and old friends. Tulsk Camogie Club will host training for U-6 and U-8 players this Saturday, April 25th in the Tulsk GAA grounds from 9.45 a.m..These sessions are suitable for children aged between five and eight years of age. For further details, contact Siobhan on 087-761 2383.
Tulsk Community Games annual Sports Day takes place in Tulsk GAA grounds on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4th from 1.30 p.m.. Featured on the day will be track races, novelty races and a range of field events. The day is always a sporting and social highlight in the local community that is not to be missed.
Congratulations to the fantastic debating team representing Killina National School who have reached the finals of the Carrick-on-Shannon Education Centre Concern debates. The team were successful in defeating the motion of 'Tourism does more harm than good'. The team now look forward to their final on May 1st!
The action is coming thick and fast for Tulsk’s adult football teams over coming weeks. This Saturday, April 25th at 6 p.m. in Tulsk in the O’Rourke Cup, the side face old rivals Oran. Then on Wednesday, April 29th, Kiltoom will host the meeting of St. Brigid’s and Tulsk. Then on Sunday, May 3rd at 1pm in Ballinlough in the Division Four League, Tulsk’s second string or ‘B’ team face their counterparts from Michael Glavey’s.
