A garda who was suspended from work and criminally investigated after he loaned a bicycle to an elderly farmer during Covid received a standing ovation at today’s Garda Representative Association (GRA) conference.

Detective Garda Eamon Cunnane appeared on the podium with seven other gardaí from Limerick and Clare who were suspended for almost six years as part of a separate probe into penalty points.

All eight were suspended by former commissioner Drew Harris but were later found to have done nothing wrong.

Garda Cunnane, who suffered a four year ordeal, sued the State and was awarded more than €250,000 in damages earlier this year.

The GRA said the suspension had left a “shameful stain” on the garda organisation.
