Local Notes: Irish Language for Beginners, Changing Gears Course, Living Well

ROSCOMMON COMMUNITY CHALLENGE 2026 

The annual Roscommon Community Challenge will take place this year on Friday, March 6th with a moonlight 5 and 8k trip around the surrounds of Roscommon Town. In advance of this event, the usual and extremely popular twice weekly training sessions will take place. Training comprises of 16 structured evening sessions, held on Monday and Wednesday at 7 p.m. from Roscommon Community Sports Park with expert–led support for walking and running. The training programme provides a dedicated plan for walkers, which will build safely towards a 5k, it also ensures gradual progression which is suitable for all fitness levels. Everyone is training and preparing alongside each other with the same end goal, getting fitter, healthier, and completing The Roscommon Community Challenge on Friday, March 6th. If you are a complete beginner with little or no experience, if you are a walker, a jogger, a runner or indeed if you want to set yourself a challenge to improve your health and fitness this training is the place for you. Children (must be accompanied by an adult), grannies grandads, everyone is welcome to what is a fun and challenging experience no matter what level of fitness you are currently at there is a place for you on the training programme. This year special emphasis will be placed on the walking group with additional supports being provided to them to enable them to reach their highest potential. Register now to be part of something special, improve your health and fitness and at the same time know that you are helping a wonderful cause in Roscommon Special Olympics and Roscommon Community Sports Park. INTO AGM 

An INTO AGM and branch meeting will take place on Thursday, January 15th at 7.30 p.m. in Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon Town. Nomination of delegates to annual congress. Note no branch committee elections this year PARENTING ALONE GROUP The People Parenting Alone group resumes meetings in the SRFRC on January 19th at 6 p.m.. All Welcome, Mae from Bitsy and Bobsy Art Club will facilitate an arts and crafts class for children while parents connect. COFFEE MORNING AT CBS 

To celebrate Catholic Schools Week 2026, Roscommon CBS will be hosting a grandparents and special friends coffee morning for all First Year students on Monday, January 19th from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring your grandparent(s) and special friends (aunts, uncles, older cousins etc.) into CBS Roscommon for a tea/coffee and treats to celebrate their role in your lives.

GAELSCOIL DE HIDE OPEN MORNING

Gaelscoil de hÍde will be hosting an open morning on Saturday, January 24th from 11 a.m. - 12.30 p.m.. Parents of children considering enrolling in the school for September 2026/2027 are very welcome to attend along with their children. Come and see what Gaelscoil de hÍde has to offer your child. ST. COMAN’S WOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL 

Registration for new entrants for September 2026 at St. Coman’s Wood Primary School is now open. The application form is available for filling in on-line at the school website www.comanswoodprimary.ie. An information evening will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd from 7 - 8 p.m. with Dr. Úna Feeley’s address for parents only. An open evening will be held on Thursday, February 5th, 6 - 7 p.m. – all children very welcome.

CHANGING GEARS COURSE 

Changing Gears is a course, which supports people in dealing with change and life transitions (e.g. getting the most from retirement/handling bereavement/ill health/becoming a carer, or having more time for yourself) in mid to later life. It helps participants to identify what has served them well up to now in life, the successes and challenges they have experienced, what supports they have in place and what they may need to introduce for their next stage of life. Dates for Roscommon are Mondays in January, 19th, and 26th (one week gap), February 9th and 16th from 10.30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Gleesons, Market Square, Roscommon. COME & SING WITH COR COMAIN 

Thinking of joining a choir? Join Cór Comáin for a relaxed come and sing workshop and experience choral music, rehearsal style, and welcoming community. LIVING WELL 

Living Well is a free HSE programme which helps people living with a long-term health condition to manage their condition and improve their overall wellbeing. Anyone with any chronic illness such as diabetes, arthritis, COPD, cardiac illness, anxiety, etc. can benefit from these workshops. The next programme commences on Thursday, January 22nd of at 10.30 a.m. in the Cube Building Roscommon Town.
