Local Notes: Line Dancing Classes, Collection For M.S, Bereavements

POPULAR PUBLICAN WIDELY MOURNED 

Mr Kevin Daly, Curnaseer, Kiltoom, whose sudden passing took place on Wednesday, April 8th, was one of South Roscommon's best known publicans extending over 40 years at Daly's Tavern, Curnaseer, Kiltoom. Aged 66 in December last, he took ill while on a golf outing with the Midland Vintners Golf Society at Moate Golf Club. Of a friendly and chatty disposition, in his role as a publican he was noted for his listening skills, tact and discretion in all his dealings with the general public. His passing has caused profound shock and sadness within his immediate and extended family circle, customer base, neighbours and wide circle of friends. A devoted son, husband and father, he was an obliging neighbour and reliable friend. He took a keen interest in current affairs, political affairs and farming affairs. He was a first cousin of Roscommon/East Galway Fianna Fail Dail Deputy, Dr Martin Daly, Ballygar. He was a member of the Kiltoom Drama Group down the years and he performed with distinction in a number of productions including pantomimes. An avid sports enthusiast, he was a long-time member of Athlone Rugby Club and Athlone Golf Club. He was also a follower of the GAA and soccer scene locally and nationally and in his role as a publican provided sponsorships and facilities for sporting groups including the South Westmeath Hunt. He is survived by his wife, Mary, (nee Harney, Summerhill, Athlone) and sons, Paul, Colin and Cian. He is also survived by his mother, Patricia (nee Donohoe, Curnaseer); brothers, David and Niall; sisters, Caroline and Anne; mother-in-law, Mrs Kitty Harney and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay, Kiltoom, on Monday, April 13th, the burial took place in Kiltoom Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Michael McManus, PP, Kiltoom and Cam. The Midland Vintners Golf Society formed a guard of honour at the Church on Monday morning.

CARD DRIVE WINNERS 

The winners of the weekly progressive 25 card drive at the St Brigid's Handball Complex in Curraghboy on Tuesday night last were Mrs Marian Grehan, Johnny Hughes, Gerry Menton, Ms Janette Nestor, Mrs Audrey Flatley, Mrs Edel Coyle, Liam Gately, Vinny Brady, Peter McHugh and Sean Gately.

MS COLLECTION 

The recent church gate collection in aid of the Roscommon branch of MS Ireland realised €372.06 at the Church of the Risen Christ, Ballybay, Kiltoom, and €208.93 at St Brigid's Church, Curraghboy. The Roscommon MS branch wishes to thank all those who contributed or assisted in any way with the collection.

MOBILE LIBRARY 

The Roscommon Mobile Library service will visit Monksland on Thursday, May 7th, from 1 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. and once again on Thursday, May 21st, from 1 p.m. to 3.30 p.m.. Library membership is free.

LATE MR DOMINIC MULRY 

The death took place recently at Roscommon Hospice of Mr Dominic Mulry, Longwood, County Meath, who was a native of Jamestown, Ballyforan. The deceased was an engineer by profession and he had resided at Longwood for the past 26 years. A member of a very well-known South Roscommon family, he had been in ill health for some time and he bore his illness with characteristic dignity and fortitude. The deceased obtained the B Eng degree at University College, Galway in 1984 and worked initially as an engineer on a number of road projects in southern England before taking up an engineering post with Roscommon County Council in the mid-nineties. He worked latterly as a senior executive engineer with Kildare County Council for 26 years and he retired from that post two years back. Of a chatty and friendly disposition, he was held in high regard by his work colleagues and all those who made his acquaintance. He was noted for his sense of neighbourliness in his residential catchment and his innate decency and integrity was always to the fore in all his dealings with the general public. He was a noted cross country runner in his teen years while attending St Mary's College, Ballygar, and he enjoyed viewing all sport on television. He enjoyed reading avidly and widely as his main hobby. He took a keen interest in current affairs and political affairs and was an engaging conversationalist on a one to one basis. He was predeceased in recent months by his father, Tom, who was aged 100, and is survived by his mother, Phyllis, (nee Lynch, Dysart); brothers, Frank, Jamestown; Mark, Jamestown; Joseph, Jamestown; Brian, Loughrea; Raymond, the Walk, Roscommon; Aidan, Athleague; sisters, Mrs Mary Maher, Ennis, County Clare and Mrs Grace Mannion, Galway. He is also survived by one uncle, Joe, Jamestown; aunts, Mrs Teresa Mulligan, Funshinagh, Four Roads; Mrs Bernadette Doyle, Athlone; Mrs Dympna Hall, Glasson, Athlone; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd, Four Roads, on Wednesday, April 8th, the burial took place in Tisrara Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Francis Beirne, PP, Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara.

LATE MR TOMMY MORGAN 

The death took place on Saturday, March 28th, at Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, of Mr Tommy Morgan, Breeole, Taughmaconnell. Aged 84 in July last, he had been in ill health a short time and he bore his illness with characteristic resilience. The deceased had been a Bord Na Mona employee on the Derryfadda bogs for over 20 years and he was deservedly popular with his work colleagues and all those with whom he became acquainted. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was a most obliging neighbour and reliable friend. He enjoyed reading as a hobby and he also delighted in viewing all motor racing on television. He was predeceased by his son, Noel in January 2018 and is survived by his wife, Helen, (nee Naughton, Lisbrock, Brideswell); son, David, Birmingham; daughters, Rosemary, South Yorkshire, UK; Collette, Breeole, Taughmaconnell. He is also survived by six grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Mass of the Resurrection at St Patrick's Church, Dysart, on Wednesday, April 1st, the burial took place in Taughmaconnell Cemetery. The celebrant of the Mass was Very Rev. Francis Beirne, PP, Ballyforan, Dysart and Tisrara.

LATE MS ANNE GERAGHTY 

The death took place on Thursday, April 2nd, at her residence, of Ms Anne Geraghty, Correal, Athleague. Aged 87 on February 2nd last, she was a member of a well-known family in that locality and she enjoyed the respect and esteem of all those with whom she became acquainted. A general nurse by profession, she undertook her general nursing training in Manchester and also worked as a nurse in both Boston and San Francisco for some years before returning to mid-Roscommon to take up a nursing post at Roscommon University Hospital. In her role on the nursing staff of the hospital for a number of years she was noted for her undoubted nursing skills and her care and compassion for all those entrusted into her professional care. She enjoyed bridge playing with Roscommon bridge club as a hobby and she also enjoyed gardening and reading as hobbies. An excellent homemaker, she was skilful at knitting, sewing and embroidery work. A most obliging neighbour, her genuine nature and affability enabled her to make friendships with a wide age range. A devout Catholic, she visited Lourdes and Knock Shrine regularly and supported a wide range of charitable causes and bequests. A member of a farming family of four girls and seven boys, she is survived by brothers, Matt, Correal, Athleague; Frank, Roscommon Road, Athlone; nieces, nephews and a number of other relatives. Following Concelebrated Mass at the Church of the Assumption, Fuerty, on Saturday, April 4th, the burial took place in Athleague Cemetery. The principal celebrant of the Mass was Rev. Adrian Keelo, OFM, Rome, a nephew of the deceased. The other celebrants were Very Rev. Eugene McLoughlin, retired PP, Athleague and Roscommon; Very Rev. Michael Breslin, retired PP, Ballygar; Rev. Fr Pravis, CC, Castlecoote; Rev. Ali Joe, CC, Athleague; Very Rev. Francis Glennon, retired PP, Cloverhill.

LINE DANCING 

Line dancing classes have resumed at St Brigid's Handball Complex in Curraghboy on successive Mondays. The classes for beginners commence at 7 p.m. and the classes for advanced are at 8.15 p.m.. All are welcome.
