GLINSK/CREGGS

GLINSK GAA/LGFA CELEBRATION

The countdown has begun for what should be a great night of celebration in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon on December 29th where Glinsk GAA and Glinsk LGFA will gather to celebrate what was an incredible year for football in the parish. The men's team won the County Junior A Championship final and also the North Board final. The ladies team won the Junior League final, the U-14 team won the League final and lost the championship decider to a strong Moycullen team. The U-15 girls won Feile and the U-16 girls and minor girls also contested league finals. Overall teams from the parish contested six county finals and took home four trophies. A historic achievement by any stretch of the imagination for a small parish and deserves to be celebrated.

With more and more emphasis being placed on saving the environment in areas like recycling etc, this service is very much in line with this positive thinking.

HERITAGE SOCIETY

During the winter period, while monthly meetings are on hold, the ongoing projects are continuing. One such project, now completed and already selling very well on the market, is the 2027 calendar, which, as in previous years, is a joint venture with colleagues in the local Tidy Towns group. The group has just completed Phase One of another very ambitious project, the production of a Storymap of the parish. This is a two year project, and is again a joint venture involving the Heritage Society and the local Tidy Towns group. Much of the groundwork for this project has been carried out in Phase One, with some of the remainder of the work already being addressed in the early stages of Phase Two. When completed, this Storymap will be an invaluable online resource. Regular contacts are being maintained with many members of our world-wide diaspora, while visitors, including a number from overseas, continue to call to Templetogher.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT GRANT

Williamstown Heritage Society has consistently received support from Galway County Council in many ways, whether advice, consultation, meetings and grants. Galway County Council has, this year, through its Community Support Scheme, sanctioned a grant towards Phase One of the joint production by Williamstown Heritage Society and Williamstown Tidy Towns of a Storymap for the parish. This generous support is greatly appreciated by all members.

CALENDAR

The annual calendar is now available, is selling very well, and the very positive comments being received on the finished product from so many people is most encouraging. One of the advantages of having it available early is to facilitate those who wish to post copies abroad. The price of the calendar is €10 and the postage costs to various destinations are as follows: Ireland, €3.50; UK, €7; USA, €10; Australia, €12. With modern technology, it is possible to improve photographs immensely. This year's calendar, therefore, includes a nice mixture of new and old photos and some spectacular aerial photos from the RTÉ 1 Nationwide programme, broadcast in August. There has been, once again, a very generous response from the many sponsors of the calendar, to whom all are very grateful. The calendar is available in Sharkey's Spar, in SNJ Cafe (both Williamstown) or directly from Noel Finnegan (086 6086264) or Leo Finnegan (086 1603043).
