Local Notes: Mr and Mrs Claus visiting Elphin, funding for Cavetown and variety show

The annual pre-Christmas Mass will be celebrated in Creeve Community Centre on Friday, December 12th at 8 p.m.. Light refreshments will be served afterwards and all are welcome to attend.
The annual 25 card drive will be held in Creeve Community Centre on Friday, December 12th commencing at 9 p.m., €500 in prize money. Tickets €5 each available from committee members.
For many years it has been an Abbeycartron NS tradition, started by Anne Rock and continued by Ms Towey, to support the Team Hope Christmas shoe box appeal, that helps children around the world affected by poverty. Once again this year there was a great response from families in the school. Thanks a million to everyone who brought in a box or donated online to a very worthy cause thanks also to Àine and everyone at Chatterland for their donations.

Mr & Mrs Claus will be turning on the Christmas lights in Elphin on Friday, December 5th at 7 p.m.. Everyone is welcome.

The next in the series of singers nights in the Tower Inn Elphin will take place on Sunday, November 30th at 8.30 p.m.. All singers and genre of singing will be made very welcome please come along to take part or just to listen and enjoy. The Tower trad sessions which take place on Tuesdays at 8.30 p.m. every week are proving to be a great night’s entertainment and all the regular musicians look forward to the addition of new musicians and listeners for a really enjoyable night.

The mobile library visits Elphin every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
Elphin Tidy Towns committee and volunteers meet every Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Polytunnel. Volunteers will be doing jobs like tidying the tunnel, checking on planters. preparing and planning for next year's planting. The group would love to welcome some new members. Do as little or as much as you can. No pressure. The group is excited for the coming year and would like as many as possible to join us. If you would like to have a window box or planter and want any help let the group know, that can be your contribution to Tidy Towns. If you sweep outside your front door, that’s a contribution, but let the group know. Being outside or inside the tunnel is good for mental health too, it’s a contact with the outdoors, nature, other people and the chat and cup of tea afterwards is always welcome. If you think you might be interested drop in and say hello.
Congratulations to TY student Donal Higgins who is one of just 24 students nationwide selected to travel to the European Parliament in Strasbourg to take part in Euroscola, a youth parliament bringing together students from across EU member states. This fantastic opportunity is sponsored by Roscommon County Council and the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform. Well done, Donal — an incredible achievement and a brilliant ambassador for Elphin Community College.

‘Dear Old Elphin: A Journey in Time’, the book written by Elphin author Noel Collins, is now available at all Roscommon library outlets in the county.
The Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht recently announced funding of €200,000 under the Outdoor and Recreation Infrastructure Scheme for improvements at Cavetown Lake. The development will include the installation of a pontoon and also the provision of a seating area with improved shower facilities.
A Remembrance Mass for the deceased of the parish will be celebrated in Croghan Church on Friday, November 21st at 7 p.m.. Following the Mass parishioners are invited to the Croghan Community Café for refreshments. All welcome.
Fr. Alan P.P. will visit the sick and housebound in the parish on this Thursday and Friday, November 20th/21st, at the usual times.
The Croghan Variety Show Committee is so grateful to everyone who supported the 2025 Croghan Variety Show. It was a huge success and raised €2,248 for the Croghan Projects Group and €1,397.20 from the raffle for North West Stop.
Stitch and Bitch group meets every Friday at 10.30 a.m. in the Old Creamery Cafe, Croghan. If you are passionate about yarn, hooks and needles or if you are a complete beginner this group is the perfect place for you.
