Roscommon boy gearing up for 290km charity cycle

Tulsk father and son, Ed and Aaron Payne.

A nine year old Roscommon boy will be getting on his bike for charity this midterm.

Tulsk’s Aaron Payne will be undertaking a 290km cycle, following the Grand and Royal Canals. He won’t be alone as his father Ed, a highly successful elite endurance athlete will be accompanying him in the charity fundraiser. The pair will start on April 7th from Shannon Harbour County Offaly, and hope to be back in Tulsk by April 12th.

Aaron is raising money for his school Tulsk NS, and for Coman's Swimming Club, his swimming club. He is already half way to his funding target of €700.

“I love sport and cycling and want to challenge myself to complete this 290km cycle just like my daddy did when he ran it all,” said Aaron in his GoFundMe page. “He will be with me all the way to help me finish, and my mummy and brother will be supporting us with lots of food, water and encouragement.” Speaking on a video message, Ed said Aaron had put a lot of thought into this fundraiser.

“Pretty much since the day after I ran the distance three years ago, he said he wanted to run the canals, so we talked it down to cycling them,” Ed said. “We cycled one together, the Royal Canal two years ago from Dublin back to Termonbarry. And since that he has gotten more and more excited and more certain that that was what he wanted to do.”
