Local Notes: Strokestown Parkrun, Ministerial Visit, Sam Returns

There were 43 runners and parkwalkers at Strokestown parkrun last weekend.
A big well done to our first finishers – first male, Cian Crosbie; 2nd, Mark Gillgarro; first female, Gillis Regan; 2nd, Julie Dolan. There was a warm Strokestown welcome for the visitors from Mullingar, Dublin and Australia. The perfect morning was rounded off with the all-important cuppa and chats in Strokestown Park House. As always, the hospitality was second to none, and there's no better way to finish a parkrun than catching up with friends over a cuppa. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who make it happen every week. Same time next Saturday.

Clothing collection will take place at Kiltrustan Sports Club the first Saturday of every month, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m..
In the Kilglass Gaels Lotto held on July 25th the numbers drawn were: 1, 10, 16, 21, Bonus number 17 . There was no jackpot winner: There were three Match 3 number winners of €67 each - Emmet Keane, Gavin Tully, M & T Nugent. Next week's jackpot €11600 for four correct numbers, €15600 for four correct numbers plus Bonus Number. Next draw takes place in the clubrooms on Saturday, August 1st.

Sympathy is extended to Micheal & Sean McHugh and Josephine McCartin and families on the death of their sister, Geraldine McDonnell, New Inn, Ballinasloe, which occurred recently. May she rest in peace.

The best wishes of the entire local community are extended to Niamh Feeney and her Roscommon team-mates ahead of this Sunday’s All-Ireland Intermediate Football Final against Fermanagh in Croke Park. The side have enjoyed a memorable voyage in reaching the decider, overcoming a Connacht final decider reversal to emerge, phoenix-like, to reach the decider. Once again, all of the local community wish Niamh and her colleagues well in Sunday’s final.
The Intermediate Club Championship gets underway this weekend as Tulsk’s first team play St. Dominic's at home in Tulsk on Friday, July 31st at 7.30 p.m.. The best wishes of the community are extended to manager Liam McNeill and all the team as they begin their round-robin series of matches. The team are sponsored by PB Networks.
Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary T.D. will visit Tulsk GAA pitch this Thursday July 30th at 5:45 p.m. to officially open the walkway around the new pitch, which was funded by his Department's CLAR Programme. This event is open to everyone to attend and marks another significant milestone in the development of local amenities in the community.
There was great excitement in the village of Tulsk on Sunday night after hordes of Mayo supporters returned home after their triumphant All-Ireland appearance on Sunday. After years of muted conveys travelling through the village, it was wonderful to see the jubilant scenes of supporters being greeted as they passed through the village after a thoroughly deserved victory. Well done to Andy Moran and his entire management team and panel on a wonderful victory which puts a spring in the step of all West of Ireland people. Speaking of steps, Andy’s sister, Eunice will be well known to many Tulsk people as she facilitated many dance classes in the village in recent years as well as performing on stage herself. The family patriarch, the late Vincent or Vince Moran will also have been known to many Tulsk people as a shrewd and most pleasant cattle dealer and farmer who was a regular at fairs and marts in the village in days gone by.
Hard luck to the Tulsk ladies in their League A Final against Four Roads recently. The side put in a tremendous performance and produced some wonderful scores in a cracking game of Camogie. Despite a huge effort, they narrowly fell short as thoughts now turn to the championship.
Ríoga speech and drama classes return to Tulsk Macra Hall on Saturday, September 5th from 10 a.m.. These fun, confidence-building classes through speech, drama, and performance will also focus on Feis preparation for those wishing to take part in competitions and Speech & Drama exam preparation for students working towards their next grade. Class times will vary depending on age groups, with the full timetable to be confirmed closer to the time. This Monday, August 3rd is a Bank or Public Holiday, which traditionally marks the start of the holiday season. Traffic volumes are expected to increase through the village, both on Friday and Monday evenings as many motorists ‘head west.’ Local road users, particularly motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to make allowance of these increased traffic flows and to exercise caution when using local routes. It’s hoped all visitor to the community have an enjoyable and pleasure experience visiting the area this weekend and for the remainder of the holiday season.

Local couples celebrating their silver, ruby, golden, diamond or platinum wedding anniversaries are invited to attend one of two jubilee masses on either Sunday, October 4th at 2.30 p.m. in Ballaghaderreen Catherdal or on Sunday, October 11th at 2.30pm in Kiltoom Church. As part of National Heritage Week, Thursday, August 20th, Rathcroghan Visitor Centre will host an event, coinciding with storytelling and the launch of Finnbennach Bull Sculpture from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.. This original sculpture, funded through Roscommon LEADER Partnership, was made by Longford artist, Liam Kavanagh and will serve as a landmark sculpture for Tulsk and Roscommon. It will celebrate the early Irish stories which inspired its creation, as well as the countless generations. The bull, made of stainless steel, represents the monstrous Finnbennach, the White Bull of Connacht, who was the property of Ailill Mac Máta, the husband of the Warrior Queen Medb (Maeve) of Connacht, whose home is at Rathcroghan. It is from here that she assembles the armies of Ireland to go across to Cooley, County Louth, to kidnap the only equal to the Finnbennach on the island, the Donn Cuailnge, the Brown Bull of Cooley. The local community are warmly invited to attend this event which celebrates the launch of a unique landmark, hear the origin story of the two bulls, how they caused war across Iron Age Ireland and how they met their ultimate end!
