Local Notes: Students on Radio Maria, Golf Lotto, Birthday Celebrations
Staff and children from Happy Feet Childcare, Castlerea who recently raised €2320 for the Children's Sunflower Hospice.
An exhibition of historical photos will be on display in Castlerea Library from Thursday, July 30th during library opening hours. These photos comprise the people places and moments that shaped the town. Please call in if you are passing, or if you have family and friends home for the next few weeks, tell them about it, they might enjoy seeing what Castlerea was like in past times.
Students from St. Michael's Special School and Tarmon NS will sing a song each on Radio Maria on this Tuesday, July 28th on The Little Flower Hour programme from 8 to 9 p.m.. A sincere thank you to pupils, teachers and staff for their support.
The winning bonus ball number in Castlerea Golf Club’s lotto for July 22nd was number 13. Winners of this week’s lotto were Myles and Deirdre Hawkshaw, Mary O’Connell, Jimmy Mannion, Annette Craig, and Breege Hester. Each receive €100.
Congratulations are extended to Matthew Crossan who celebrated his birthday at the Friday evening club gathering in Mulvihill’s on Friday, July 17th. Of course there would be not birthday celebration without a cake, and this was provided by Bernie Mulvihill who with the help of Miriam Gannon’s receipe baked it especially for the occasion. A most enjoyable time was had by all.
The death occurred of Joe Connelly Cloonkeen, Castlerea, peacefully, at home with his family by his side after an illness borne with courage and dignity on Saturday, July 18th. Predeceased by his parents Christopher and Elizabeth, his sister Betty and baby James McTague. Deceased was a most kind, gentle, jolly and inoffensive person. He was a most obliging neighbour. He was a man of the land and took great pride in his farm and gardening. He loved noting better than hopping up on his tractor and going about doing his daily chores. He had a great interest in sport and followed the involvement of his family and grandchildren in all sports. He was a great family person and had a great devotion to Our Lady of Knock. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his heartbroken family, wife, Mary; sons, Marty and Ger (Castlerea); daughters, Sandra (Elphin), Maura (Roscommon) and Fiona (Ballinlough); grandchildren, Daniel, Keevan, Hannah, Molly, Oisin, Amelia, Ellie, Jack, Noah, Saoirse, Emily and Sam; brother, PJ, (Castlerea) and sister, Mary Forde (Cummer); sons-in-law, Seamus McTague, Dougie Doolan and Declan McDermott; daughter-in-law, Elaine, and Ger’s partner Nuala; his mother-in-law, Bridget Lyons; brothers-in-law, Peter, Pat, John, Tom and Gerry; sisters-in-law, Margaret and Maggie; nephews, nieces, cousins especially Martin, extended family, neighbours and friends. His remains were removed from his home to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr. John McManus private cremation took place in Mount Jerome Crematorium, Dublin. Before the final blessing, his daughters Maura and Fiona read the eulogy, and his son Marty read the reflection. The ceremony was enhanced by the music and singing of Carmel McLoughlin and with a beautiful rendering of Our Lady of Knock by his grandchildren Molly and Hannah. A guard of honour was provided by Castlerea Celtic Football Cub. May Joe’s gentle soul rest in peace.
The death occurred of Mrs Philomena (Phil) Keegan (née Silver),The Bronx, New York and formerly of Tarmon, Castlerea on Thursday, July 9th suddenly at her home. Predeceased by her parents Michael and Bridie, sisters Agnes and Mary, brothers John, Brendan, and Gerard, and husband Kevin. Deceased was a member of a highly respected Tarmon and Castlerea family. She was full of life, always jolly and very witty. Although she was in the USA for some years she never forgot her roots. She would come home on visits and always kept in touch with her family and friends. She was a woman of great faith and always tuned into the St. Patrick’s Church webcam to watch Sunday and funeral Masses. She will be profoundly missed by her daughters, Laura and Lisa; son-in-law, Darren; and her grandsons, whom she loved so much, Lucas, Noah, and Hunter; her sisters, Breege, Pat, Catherine, and Ann, and her brother Michael; along with all her nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Reception of Phil's ashes into St. Patrick's Church, Castlerea for Mass of the Resurrection celebrated by Fr. John McManus took place on Monday, July 20th May Phil rest in peace.
