BALLAGHADERREEN 

HEADLINE ACTS ANNOUNCED FOR ARTS FESTIVAL 2026 

Phil Coulter will give a two-hour concert at St Nathy’s Cathedral, Ballaghaderreen, on Thursday August 6th next. The man who wrote `The Town I Love So Well’, `Scorn Not His Simplicity,’ `Congratulations’, `Puppet on a String’ and `Ireland’s Call’, will be one of the highlight of this year’s Ballaghaderreen Arts Festival, which takes place from Saturday, August 1st to Sunday, August 9th. RTÉ’s Miriam O’Callaghan will discuss her new book ‘Miriam’ at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 1st in Durkin’s on the Square. Appearing at the Cathedral on Wednesday, August 5th, will be one of Ireland’s most respected and influential traditional groups, Altan, all the way from Donegal. Comedians taking part in stand-up at Edmondstown House this year on Sunday, August 9th will be Roscommon’s own Sharon Mannion, with Colm O’Regan, and Gar Curran while leading Abba tribute band, Abbaesque, will be there on Saturday, August 8th. The Players will present Brian Friel’s `Dancing at Lughnasa’ in St Nathy’s College on August 1st/2nd/3rd with Noel Coward’s `Blithe Spirit’ at Edmondstown House on August 7/8/9th. Aindrias de Staic and friends will present `By the Light of the Silvery Moon’ in St Nathy’s College on Tuesday, August 4th while the ConTempo String Quartet will play Mozart and Weber, with John Finucane on clarinet, there on Friday, August 7th. It follows an all-day climate conference at the same venue where speakers include Dr Mike Ryan, formerly of the World Health Organisation, and Ireland’s former Chief Medical Officer, Professor Breda Smyth. GAA 50/50 DRAW 

The GAA 50/50 draw was held in Clarke’s Bar on Sunday night last for a jackpot of €540 . Winners were Adam and Fergus Hamilton, seller, Mollys. Next week’s draw is in Spell’s on Pound St.

BALLAGH FC 50/50 

Ballaghaderreen FC’s 50/50 club draw took place on Tuesday, June 30th with a jackpot of €215. Congratulations to Ruby and Ollie, with the winning ticket sold by The Hatch Bar. The next draw will take place on Tuesday, July 7th at the Community Park. Thank you to everyone for the continued support. Tickets are available from outlets throughout the town and online at Clubforce.com, and annual tickets are also available for €90.

SUMMER CAMP IN TIBOHINE 

Active Sparks Summer Camp takes place in Tibohine NS from Monday, July 27th to Friday, July 31st, running daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The camp is open to children aged 4–12 years and costs €75 per child. Activities will include badminton, indoor soccer, table tennis, face painting, volleyball, basketball, karaoke, pitch and putt, and lots more. With a focus on fun, friends and summer memories, places can be booked by contacting 083 101 0154. A separate bus service will be available to transport children to and from the event. SMARTPHONE HELP

The Community Resource Centre will hold a free five-week workshop every Tuesday during the month of July on how to get the best photos on your smartphone. The workshop will include camera functions, angles and settings. To book a place, contact 086 8038535.

SLIGO ROVERS/BALLAGHADERREEN FC 

A Sligo Rovers Summer Camp is coming to Ballaghaderreen FC this week to Friday, July 10th. The camp is open to children aged 7 to 13 years and costs €85 per participant. All participants will receive a Sligo Rovers top and a complimentary match ticket for The Showgrounds. WALKING GROUP

SPOKEN WORD AT SPELL’S 

Award winning author and poet Jessamine O' Connor curates this new monthly Spoken Word events in Spell’s Bar. In June 21 performers, aged from 18 to 70s, and a stellar turn out, were welcomed. This project is supported by Creative Places Ballaghaderreen Local Creative Call Grant 2026. The next Spoken Word Club is Thursday, July 16th from 7 – 9 p.m. in Spell’s Bar. All welcome.

IMMERSIVE ART AT WILLOWBROOK 

A two day art workshop, supported by Creative Places Ballaghaderreen Local Creative Call Grant 2026, and exploring the landscape at Willowbrook Glamping, was hosted by David Whitfield. The artwork created by 10 different artists will feature in an upcoming exhibition from August 15th - 23rd at the New Art Gallery. Boyle.

JOURNAL MAKING WORKSHOP 

Catherine Fanning recently hosted a journal making workshop at Ballagh Library exploring mixed media, collage, stamping in a relaxed, creative space. Her next artist researcher art action will be held this month. Catherine is the artist researcher for Creative Places Ballaghaderreen for 2026 - 2026.

FILM CLUB MEETINGS 

Film Club meetings take place once a month where participants share films curated by different members each month, followed by chat, tea and coffee. The Film Club is looking for new members. The next Film Club meeting is Tuesday, July 28th from 7 – 9 p.m. at Ballagh Library.

SPCA COLLECTION 

Roscommon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will hold its annual church gate collection at St. John The Baptist & Colman Church, Derrinacraths on Sunday, July 12th. Roscommon SPCA is a charity run by a team of dedicated volunteers. All money donated goes directly to animal welfare in the county.

Mass will take place in Cloonshanville Cemetery on this Sunday, July 12th at 10 a.m.; Drummin Cemetery on Saturday, July 18th at 8 p.m.; Fairymount New Cemetery on Sunday, July 19th at 11.30 a.m.; Tibohine New Cemetery on Saturday, July 25th at 7 p.m.; Tibohine Old Cemetery Saturday, August 1st at 7 p.m.; Fairymount Old Cemetery on Sunday, August 2nd at 11.30 a.m. and Kilcorkey Cemetery on Friday, August 7th at 7 p.m..

LATE MR STEPHEN FOY 

The death took place of Mr Stephen Foy, Ballybofey, County Donegal on Sunday, June 21st last at Letterkenny University Hospital. Father of P.J. Foy, Barnahalla, Fairymount, the late Stephen is also survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Liz, daughters, Denise and Caroline, son, Martin, grandchildren brothers, sisters, extended family, extended family, relatives and friends. His remains were removed from his residence on Wednesday, June 24th last for Requiem Mass in St Mary's Church, Sessiaghoniell followed afterwards by burial in the adjoining churchyard.

LATE MRS FLORENCE FLYNN 

The peaceful death occurred, after a short illness, of Mrs Florence (Flo) Flynn, Carrowncully, Ballinameen and Clontarf, Dublin on Thursday, July 2nd last at Roscommon Hospice. Florence (née Shannon) is sadly missed and remembered with love by her husband, John, sister, Teresa (Richie), brother, Peter Shannon (Maura), sister-in-law, Sr. Marie (LSA), nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and many friends. Her remains were removed from her home on Monday, July 6th last to the Church of the Holy Trinity, Kilmaryal for Mass of the Resurrection. A private Cremation service took place thereafter.

BEREAVEMENTS 

Pray for the repose of the souls of Ms Anne Moylan, Foxborough, Ballinlough; Mr Tom Dillon, Hawkesford, Ballaghaderreen; Mrs Pauline Shanagher, Enfield, Ballintubber and Ms Penelope Keith, Surrey, England. May they rest in peace.

CHURCH NEWS 

Masses will be held in Tibohine at 7 p.m. on Tuesday (7th), Fairymount at 10 a.m. on Wednesday (8th), Frenchpark at 7 p.m. on Thursday (9th), Ballinagare at 7 p.m. on Friday (10th), Tibohine at 7 p.m. and Ballinagare at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday (11th) and in Fairymount at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, July 12th.

SEWING 

Classes for beginners will take place at The Cornerstone in Frenchpark, starting on Tuesday, July 21st next from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Four-week course - €40. Places are limited. To book phone (094) 9870340.

LOTTO 

Western Gaels held its weekly lottery draw on Saturday, July 4th last. There was no jackpot winner. The numbers drawn were 2, 12, 14 and 25. Cash prize winners (€20 each) were Shane Coleman, Caoimhe Dowd, Trevor/Olivia Farrell, Barry Philips and Padraig Scott. The next draw (jackpot €3,400) will take place at the clubhouse in Frenchpark on this Saturday, July 11th. Tickets are available on-line through the Clubforce app or from local outlets.

SUMMER CAMPS 

Summer music and yoga camps will take place from Monday, July 13th to Friday, July 17th next, 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon, in Tibohine Community Centre. Limited to 15 spaces.
