A County Roscommon man was among the 207 new gardaí who graduated last week from the Garda Training College in Templemore.

This new class brings the number of gardaí to the highest in the history of the state, 14,825. This graduation class of Intake 261 is the largest single attestation class since Covid-19.

One of them is Garda Cameron Brill from Athlone, County Roscommon, who will be stationed in Drogheda. Speaking to the media, Garda Brill said he always wanted to join the guards.

“I want to help people. This is the number one job for that, so I went for it,” he said.

Previously a leisure assistant in Athlone’s Zen Fitness and Leisure centre, Garda Brill said he “loved” the garda training in Templemore.

He said he was excited for the new role and to help the public.

“It’s tough, but you have a crew of people around you all the time, and there’s help everywhere. I don’t want a job where you’re going in, and it’s monotonous — there's something new every day.”
