The death occurred peacefully on Wednesday, February 12th at his residence of Mr Patrick (Paddy) Coughlan, Cloonkeen, Castlerea. He was predeceased by his parents Paddy and Mary. Paddy was a very kind and gentle person. He was a most obliging neighbour and a hard worker. He was well liked by both his work colleagues and all who knew him and this was borne out by the large number of people that attended the removal of his remains on Friday evening and his funeral Mass and burial on Saturday. Paddy was a true gentleman, always willing to lend a hand to those in need. He was also a man of great faith and had a great devotion to Our Lady and always carried his rosary beads with him. Fr. Kevin Reynolds in his homily said that Paddy was a true gentleman and had a great love for his family. He was also a man of faith and a man of the Church. When he suffered a serious injury some years ago, he showed great willpower and it was his faith and family that helped him to make a good recovery. Mr. Michael Ward of Ward and Burke, in his eulogy, paid tribute to Paddy for his commitment to the company over the years, especially the way he used to look after the younger members of staff when they took up employment. He said that he played a major part in the success of Ward and Burke business and that he would be sadly missed. Paddy was also a farmer. He loved the farm and always kept it in good shape. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and he will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Marion; sons, Gerard (Ballyhaunis); Trevor (Frenchpark), daughter, Gillian (Knockcroghery); his adored grandchildren, Elliott, Lewis and Robin; brother James (Teresa); sister, Jane Byron (Gay); Gerard’s partner, Lynsey; Trevor’s partner, Catherine; brothers-in-law, Noel Leonard (Castlerea); John Leonard (Donmaon); nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family, neighbours and work colleagues in Ward and Burke. His remains were removed from McDonagh’s Funeral Home to St. Patrick’s Church, Castlerea and following Mass of the Resurrection on Saturday celebrated by Fr. Kevin Reynolds with co-celebrant Fr. Shay Casey, Athlone, burial took place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Castlerea. Before the final blessing Michale Ward gave the eulogy. The ceremony was enhanced by the music and singing of Jacqueline Kenny, Castlerea, and Michelle McNulty, Collette McNulty, Geraldine McNulty and Rosin and Liam, all from Ballina.

The death occurred peacefully on Monday, February 10th at Galway University Hospital of Mrs Phyllis (Phil) Despard, (nee Fergus), Tarmon Manor, Castlerea, and Templeogue, Dublin and Galway. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard, son Richie, granddaughter, Megan, brothers, Billy, John and Paddy Joe and sister Ann. Deceased was a very kind, gentle and jolly person and a wonderful neighbour. She was good company and loved company and anyone that frequented her home were always made most welcome. She enjoyed life and had a great love for her family and her adored grandchildren and loved when they would get together for family gatherings. She was a woman of great faith. She was very fond of knitting, and it was one of her favourite pastimes. The other was her garden which she attended to on a daily basis making sure that it was always in top shape. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and she will be sadly missed by her daughters, Mary Teresa, Susan and Mary; son, Will; brothers, Tim, Gerard and Martin; sisters, Carmel, Bernie, Marie and Chrissie; grandchildren, son-in-law Fergus, extended family, neighbours and friends.
