Michael, 14 Sycamore Crescent, Boyle and formally Cloonfinglas, Fairymount, is deeply regretted by his nephew and carer Neil McGarry, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Philip and Mary, sisters Kathleen Coyne and Mary McGarry and his brother Bernard.

He will repose in Higgins and Sons Funeral Home, Ballinameen this evening, Wednesday, from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., to arrive to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Fairymount at 8 p.m..

Michael will be laid to rest tomorrow in Fairymount Cemetery following Funeral Mass.

The country’s second oldest man, he celebrated his 107th birthday in January in Fairymount Church, where he was baptised, and in Hester's of Castlerea.

To mark the occasion Michael recited a poem for a gathering of family and friends.

Michael was still driving at 98, and was an avid reader of the Roscommon Herald. A staunch Fianna Fáil supporter all his life, he carried his party membership card and his driver’s licence (valid until 2018) in his wallet.

He was also a keen GAA supporter and followed the fortunes of Roscommon and Ballinameen.
