The council has acquired 13 derelict properties in the county for social housing.

Roscommon County Council said it was delighted to announce a significant acquisition of derelict properties in the town of Ballaghaderreen. The revitalisation of these 13 derelict houses signifies the beginning of a new chapter for Shannon Valley, Ballaghaderreen, and stands as a testament to the power of proactive governance and community collaboration, the council said.

“The council has successfully purchased 13 derelict houses in Shannon Valley, Ballaghaderreen, following extensive negotiations and an agreement brokered with the receiver and insolvency firm,” the council said in a statement. “This milestone underscores the council's steadfast commitment to housing regeneration and community development in Ballaghaderreen.” The acquisition of these properties reflects the council’s proactive approach to repurposing neglected assets for the benefit of the local community, it said.

“These long-vacant and derelict houses will undergo comprehensive renovation under the guidance of the Roscommon Housing Section,” it said.

“Once refurbished, they will be transformed into social housing units, offering essential accommodation for families and individuals in need and assist greatly in addressing housing supply for those on the council waiting list in the Ballaghaderreen area.” Acting Director of Housing, Culture and International Protection, Ms Fiona Ni Chuinn, said the acquisition underscores our unwavering dedication to addressing the housing crisis facing our community.

“By breathing new life into these derelict properties, it will revitalise this neighbourhood and provide safe, secure housing for those most in need," said Ms Ni Chuinn.

The regeneration project is anticipated to have a transformative impact on the Shannon Valley area and beyond, fostering a renewed sense of pride and rejuvenation within the community.

"We extend our gratitude for the support and cooperation of all parties involved in making this acquisition a reality."
