Funding of more than €2.2 million for housing adaptation grants in the county has been announced.

The Department of Housing has today announced €129.5 million nationally in funding for Housing Adaptation Grants for Older People and Disabled People.

This year's allocation is an increase of €30m for the grant, which has seen year-on-year funding increases since 2014. When combined with contributions from local authorities, the projected funding of over €152 million for 2026 will deliver some 17,000 grant claims for older people and disabled people to help them live independently in their own homes, the department said.

Under the scheme, grants of up to €40,000 are available to assist disabled people in carrying out the necessary work to make a home more suitable for their needs. Additionally, grants of up to €10,700 are available to assist older people to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out on their homes and grants of up to €8,000 are available for mobility aids.

Senator Gareth Scahill said the funding will have a meaningful impact on the home life of many older people and those with disabilities in the county.

Senator Gareth Scahill said the funding this year of €2,266,043 for Roscommon County Council demonstrates Fine Gael’s commitment to supporting older people and those with disabilities to continue living in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.

“These grants are crucial in enabling Roscommon County Council and neighbouring councils to further support older and disabled individuals to adapt their homes to suit their needs and to maintain their independence,” Senator Scahill said.

“I have met many recipients here in Roscommon and Galway and have seen the positive difference that adaptation works have made to their lives at home. The local economy also benefits through the provision of employment for local tradespeople.

“It is fantastic to see a 30% funding increase in this grant for 2026, which will deliver 17,000 grant claims for older and disabled people, many of them living in Roscommon and Galway “I would like to commend Roscommon County Council, which does great work in administering the grants, including assessing the applications and arranging home inspections where adaptations are proposed.” “I am firmly committed to supporting individuals to remain at home and within their own communities. These increased grants will enable more people to do that.”
