Call for new slip road off N5 bypass to improve local access
The Frenchpark bypass was recently opened.
A call has been made for the provision of a new slip road off the recently opened N5 bypass to allow for “easier local access” for residents and businesses in the Frenchpark area.
Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane TD has requested Roscommon County Council to look at this proposal following concerns raised with her by members of the the local community.
In her correspondence to the Roscommon County Council’s roads Department, Deputy Kerrane asked that it would examine the possibility of a new slip road off the new bypass onto the old N5 into Frenchpark and turning down to the L5597.
In her correspondence to the local authority, she said: “I have been in touch with the National Roads Office, over the new N5 project, who advise the road is as per planning which I appreciate but where there are unintended consequences and issues raised locally, I believe they should at the very least be looked at."
Speaking on the request made, the Sinn Fein TD said: "There are many slip roads off the N4 and M4 further on towards Dublin, this is not an unusual feature.
"The building of the new bypass is welcome, these are important infrastructure projects but we have to ensure that where there are unintended consequences or impacts on the local community, there is at the very least engagement and consideration given.
“Nobody wants to have a negative impact on local businesses or on the day to day lives of people locally and so I ask that my request will be at least considered by the Roads Department,” she said.
