Supporting farmers, roads and encouraging business were just some of the issues discussed by Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Domnick Connolly and the Tánaiste Simon Harris, in a meeting in Government Buildings today.

The Tánaiste, along with senior ministers, met with 13 Fine Gael councillors who have recently been elected as the first citizen of their county.

Councillor Connolly, who was elected as Cathaoirleach in June, outlined his main priorities for his term.

“Farmers make an invaluable contribution to Roscommon’s way of life and economy, and agriculture must continue to get the support it deserves,” the Fuerty said.

“I’m also backing local SMEs and encouraging new businesses to invest here.

“Road safety remains a priority, especially outside schools and churches, and I’m looking forward to seeing the N5 upgrade progress and be completed during my term. I’ll also push for serious investment in the N61 which links Athlone, Roscommon Town, Boyle and onward to Sligo.”

Tánaiste Simon Harris said: “I want to thank Domnick for meeting me in Government Buildings and for the energy he is bringing to his new role. Fine Gael is at its best when we work as one team, locally and nationally, and Domnick will be a strong voice for Roscommon at that table along with Fine Gael councillors in the area.

“Where we can help deliver for the people of Roscommon, whether that is supporting farmers, roads investment or encouraging enterprise, my door is open, and I will be in regular contact with Domnick to see what more we can do for Roscommon. National ambition and local delivery have to go hand in hand and that is exactly what today’s meeting was about.”
